Hiking in the BVI's

We'll be in the BVI's in a couple of weeks. Some of our crew would like to know which islands have good hiking. Is there a site with the information or have some of you had good experiences? Thanks

Re: Hiking in the BVI's

Tortola, Norman Island, Peter Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke all have good hikes. Since Hurricane Irma, and for a little while longer, Peter Island is closed to the public, although there is a short hike to be had in Little Harbour. Some trails have become overgrown, but most are still there.

Re: Hiking in the BVI's

Unlike other islands, I haven't found an online list of hiking trails for the BVI. There are some good hikes on Tortola, such as around Sage Mountain. On Jost the hike is just around the island on the dirt road and it offers some nice views. There are shorter hikes on Prickly Pear and in the VG North Sound as well as through the VG park. There are also some trails on Norman Island.

Yeah most of the "hikes" are walks. The most enjoyable one i found was to the top of Virgin Gorda, there's a great lookout and we saw hermit crabs at elevation, wild orchids, etc. But this was as close as I think you can come to a hike, it's not insignificant but also no real challenge if you're healthy. The islands are just too small!

Re: Hiking in the BVI's

For hiking I go to Guadeloupe and Dominica - wonderful islands with long nature hikes (overnight ones too, if you want to).

Re: Hiking in the BVI's

Jost Van Dyke you start at Foxys and you go to the end of the road on the left the road then turns for the white bay instead at the turn you hike straight up the mountain to your right and go all the way to the top where the antennas are that’s a good hike about an hour up to top with fantastic view of all the proximal islands. Lots of goats. On the way. Otherwise you hike again from foxys to white bay on the road you pass Soggy Dollar and go all around the homes up there and reach the same peak this would take 2 hours you come back to Foxys the way straight down big path great views. Some erosion make s you hop around like the goats up there. Love it

Lots of fabulous hiking on St. John in the USVI. The guide is "St. John Off the Beaten Track" available on Amazon and elsewhere. Most of these hikes are accessible right from the major mooring sites.

Re: Hiking in the BVI's

Not a real "hike" (IMO it's a pretty warm location to be doing serious hiking, prefer life on the water with a breeze) but Sandy Cay is a very pleasant round-the-island walk.

Re: Hiking in the BVI's

We were in the Virgin Islands last spring, and to my surprise my All Trails app recommended nearby hikes. It never occured to me that it would work outside the continental U.S., but it definitely includes the Virgin Islands and details many trails among the islands. Check out All Trails!
