Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

My boat is at Salt Ponds Marina in Hampton. It is cold as hell but no ice. My aft bilge pump hose did freeze but the others are fine. Now thru Sunday should be the worst, hopefully for the whole winter.

This is a picture of the main ICW just south of North Landing bridge in Virginia Beach, about mile marker 23. It was froze solid across.

I am frozen at anchor in the pasquotank river north carolina. The river is 1/10th nmi wide here, it is well after the canal cuts. It is probably frozen in the dismal swamp canals. I was breaking ice there sailing through 2 days ago.
Looks like you will be there a few days. I believe I saw your boat at the Dismal visitor center dock on Friday, I was motorcycling past and stopped in to warm up.

I’m afraid you may be in for a few cold days before a warm up there.

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

Just my 2 bits. We are currently sitting in Broad Creek outside of Delatville about 40 miles north of Norfolk. We are frozen in with an inch of water on the creek. Temperatures are down to 7 f. For a couple of more nights and then climbing. 35 f. Was the high today. Supposed to snow 12 to 15 inches tonight and blow 30 mph. We were out of the water last night for a thru hull fix and it is warmer in the water. All seems well here with many boats in the water waiting for a change in the weather it will be next week in the high 50's.

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

My boat is on the hard in Little Creek, Virginia, and I'm concerned that I left a fair amount of canned food on board. This is the first time I've ever had to winterize the boat - I found quite a few checklists to use when winterizing and there was no mention of removing canned food or, at least, putting it in plastic bags. I just hope the cans don't freeze solid, burst open and then leak their contents into a gigantic mess.

Has anyone ever had this happen?

Never had a can burst due to freezing. They swelled up and bulged out and had to throw them out afterwards. I did have glass bottles of tomato sauce break once. It was in Fairbanks at minus 42F.

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

We have ice in the water around the marinas nearer to shore in Little Creek, VA, but it's mostly still not frozen.

My boat is maybe 3/4th the way out on the dock and is clear of ice so far.....temp inside today (this afternoon) was 31 degrees with 3 bottles of water frozen out of 12. (outside temp 22)

I turned on my Mr Heater Buddy and got the temp to 44 degree inside in about 30 minutes but it probably won't help much

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

I think there has to be some ice around my boat by now. I'm in the slip closest to the wall near the mouth of the Hampton river, at the Bluewater Yachting Center. Looks like there's no relief in sight until early next week. Really ugly.

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

So it was still pretty much the same as yesterday with a high of 22 degrees.

My boat was about 30 degrees inside with maybe 4 of 12 water bottles frozen these being the ones I had refilled. The boat still has 8"- 10" inches of snow on it though

The boats with ice around them had broken free due to wind and tide. There was maybe 2 inches around them of unfrozen water.

Lots of sun this afternoon....

Yeah, I heard they had 35 kt winds yesterday. Keeps the boats rocking, I guess.

Just need to hang on till Monday.

I would be looking for a way to heat it up down below if I were you.

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

It is still frozen up here at Deltaville. I posted a picture to the wrong forum the other day and an upside down one and a regular one to the photo gallery yesterday so forgive my learning curve. It is going down to 7 F tonight and then it is supposed to break and warm up. Hopefully the ICW breaks up and we can head south by the end of next week. We have been cold and cosy in turn but we are at the dock so electric heat and good old little buddy to pick up the slack is keeping us cosy now that we are back in the water.
Does anyone have any thoughts on when the ICW will reopen or is commercial traffic on the move?

My boat didn't have ice around it ...................

But if my $2,000 boat did, I don't think I'd worry much. I think the keel is like an inch and a half thick fiberglass as best I could figure when I was painting the boat.

I was breaking 2 " thick ice in the bilge the year these photos were taken and afterward I was thinking that it probably wasn't the best idea because it could possibly split some boats beating on thick ice in the bilge with a hammer etc.

Also, my main engine that 5 hp 4 stroke Mercury Outboard is at this time mounted on the stern railing.

Re: Ice reports - Hampton, Norfolk area?

We are up to 2+ inches of ice here in Deitaville with surge affected low tides. Does anyone know how far south the ice is affecting the ICW. Also does anyone with experience have any estimate of how long this will all take to thaw?
