There's a good chance of having favorable wind when headed north from Ft. Pierce to Jacksonville, so I would agree the ocean route can make a lot of sense. Plus, you should get some help from the Gulf Stream at least part of the way. The one thing you do need to do is be vigilant coasting along Florida. There are many fast powerboats just blasting in and out of all the inlets, freighters going both directions, various obstructions--like Cape Canaveral--etc. If a norther is predicted, be prepared to get into the next inlet beforehand. Much of the coast is just beach, making a nasty lee shore when it blows hard from the northeast.
