Key West to Puerto Rico Running Close to Cuba

I am planing a voyage with a U.S. flagged vessel from Key West to Puerto Rico and the route will be through the Nicholas Channel between Cuba and the Cay Sal Bank, and then through the Old Bahama Channel. There seems to be a tight squeeze (Maybe less than 12 miles) between Cuba and the Great Bahama Bank from Guinchos Cay to Lobos Cay. My concern is the close proximity to Cuba here. Will the Cuban Coast Guard allow me to pass through without incident?

Thanks
FG

I think i may be more concerned if the USCG letting you pass, with out stopping you- they may think your going to Cuba

FG, It is highly unlikely that you will have any issues with the Cuban Coast Guard, unless you try and come in and anchor, and even then, we did not have a problem. That area is heavily patrolled by the US Coast Guard, but of course they will not enter Cuban waters. I just don't see it as an issue, since many boats of all nationalities use the Cuban Coast on the western end to transit to and jump off for Isla Mujeras. We often were inside the 12 mile limit in making the transit. But of course, there are no guarantees. Chuck

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, FG.

As has been noted, the Old Bahama Channel is navigable, without Cuban harassment.
