Little San Salvador

Has anyone anchored off Little San Salvador en route to San Salvador? I heard it's owned by a cruise ship line. Any problems dropping the hook? There's not much available for recent visits on the internet. Thanks in advance.

Re: Little San Salvador

It SUCKED for me last March and no one got sleep. Rolled all night and I tried 3 spots. At crack of dawn all the anchored boats left.

No problem anchoring though.

Hi, Sailorboy,
Thanks for the fast response! No issues with the cruise lines in re: where to anchor?
Thanks, Rognvald

Re: Little San Salvador

We have anchored there 4 or 5 times now. As long as wind direction is good, anchorage is quite comfortable. No problems with the cruise line.
Technically you can go ashore to the high tide line... In practicality they would like you to stay away from shore while cruise ship guests are present. We have gone ashore after they left and staff treated us well, and were happy to share a beer or two(share our beer that is) and very nice to us

Bahamian law says no one owns the water.
West Bay/Half Moon Bay, on Little San Salvador Cay, is wide open and exposed, to the West through Southwest, although ocean Surge is [often] present.
The bottom is patchy grass, over deep sand - good holding, if you avoid setting on [visible] grass.
Anchor in the Western part of the bay, when weather is appropriate to anchor there [protected from N through SE winds].
The cruise ships anchor towards the Eastern portion, where the shore facilities are centered, and depart before dusk.

Re: Little San Salvador

Thanks to Chris and Gord for your feedback! From the remarks of everyone, it looks as if it is a good place for a stopover in good prevailing conditions. That fits the bill for me.
Best, Rognvald

We didn't find much to recommend LSS. The beach is nice but full of people if cruise ships are in and sporting a strange dystopian vibe if they are not. We tried a few snorkeling spots around the island and they were poor.

If you have adequate daylight you may want to push on to Cat Island. Several fun spots there.

Re: Little San Salvador

There was no cruise ship during our overnight stay and we simply went where it’s good flat water and rather far inshore. Perfectly calm night. Another boat went to the bad side as the guides recommend and I think they needed jack lines to stay on-board.

Hi, Doug,
We're just using it as an overnighter.
Thanks, Rognvald

Hi, Jedi,
What's the "bad side?"

The side less bad than the other. I tried both ends and middle. Then was no good side.

Here’s my map. The bad side is the north where the anchor symbol is. We were just off the topmost swimming area, so pretty far in and had a perfect calm night.

Of course this can vary from day to day and I don’t think we would be tolerated in that spot when a cruise ship is in.
