Long Island Sound Marinas Near NYC

We're planning 2024, and looking for a Marina to base s/v Wayfinder's summer in Long Island Sound. We need airport access and it looks like Manhasset Bay / Fort Washington, might be a good fit with easy LGA / JFK access? I should note, she is a catamaran, which limits her docking options.

Any thoughts OR better suggestions ? I searched lots of threads, but found little if any info...

Manhasset Bay and Oyster Bay both have good Long Island Railroad (LIRR) access. Both have moorings. Oyster Bay has a limited number of slips, but Manhasset Bay/Port Washington has a number of marinas with slips. Safe Harbor Capri in Port Washington currently has a number of large catamarans in slips, so they can probably accommodate you with a slip. Worlds Fair Marina in Queens is very close to LGA, but I don't know if they have slips set up for catamarans.

Agree with the comments above on Port Washington and Oyster Bay. Mooring in Oyster Bay would probably be the least expensive. Check Oyster Bay Marine Center. You can actually walk from there to the train. No Uber needed.

Good stuff!

Love the protected Oyster Bay, but a bit further from the airports than some others mentioned.

In cruising the LI Sound, are there plenty of cute port towns to visit in the W part of the sound? If not, based farther E, like Oyster, may have it's advantages. Proximity for shorter sails on some long-weekends is a plus.

Re: Long Island Sound Marinas Near NYC

There are Several marinas on city island some with protected slips and some with moorings if you want to be “in the city”, there you would be a bus that connects to a subway. You would be 2hrs from NYC harbor at most with the tide, if you sail in Horbor I would note that there can be katabatic like winds near the skyscrapers.

I am on mooring in Oyster Bay and love it. Very peaceful place and plenty of quiet time, transient moorings are close to the OBMC dock and yes LIRR trains. A choice of several different restaurants at different price ranges and a supermarket about 3/4ers of a mile, the walk back is all down hill.
Many anchor in Oyster bay cove just outside of the southern most mooring field and use th OBMC dingy dock. PM me if you have any specific questions

Cheers

The advantage of being a bit east is its easy to get to places like Northport and Pt Jeff on the LI side and over to places like Greenwich, Norwalk, Milford and the Ct River on the CT side.

For lots of details, get a copy of the Embassy Guide for cruising LI Sound.
