Matriculation Tax on the Canary Islands

I just heard about this matriculation tax business and now I am a bit confused if and how that applies for the canaries.

Our boat is 11.99m (12.45 LOA) and we arrived in Spain in November. So we still have a few months left before our 183 days are up.

Does going to the Canaries change any of that or will this be regarded as Spain just the same when it comes to the 12% tax?

I tried looking and I found some info that the Canaries are exempt but nothing I think is reliable enough.

Thanks!

Re: Matriculation Tax on the Canary Islands

Unless VAT related, Canary Islands fall into the same legal / tax basket with continental Spain. As if you sailed from Murcia to Andalusia.

Read: no legal vacation.

You must be aware that the expertise of a local officer can vary from nil to proficient. You never know which one will handle your paperwork on arrival.

Hi barnakiel,

bummer, thanks a lot though for the clarification.

I guess we'll have to hop over to Morocco then at some point.

Re: Matriculation Tax on the Canary Islands

I sailed foreign flagged boats out to Marocco. This seemed to please the authorities back then. Alas, talk it over with a lawyer as the regulators seem to catch up with crowd sourcing pretty well these days. Last time I was out was about 2010 with a Panama flagged boat. 7 years is heaps, they may have adjusted things by now.

Here, there is no economy, only taxation.

Cheers,
b.
