Hey Ralph, this isn't relevant to our cruising area, but it's good to see you posting again, and to infer that you are having some good cruising times.

Cheers,

Jim (and Ann)

Thanks Jim. We're back in Texas for this year's hurricane season. Heading east and south again next October (2015).

We understand the need to raise the mooring rates but $15 for 24 hours of internet service is outrageous. Plus, you must be on a mooring to get the internet access.

Just get a BTC SIM card and a $30 data plan... Good to go! Although I'm thinking coverage might have been sketchy in the park.

That was the most that we paid for internet in the Bahamas. There is no BTC tower in the area, so not much choice really.

If you were anchored out (not a "guest" of the Land and Sea Park), did you go to the office to ask about internet service?

I took a mooring, and didn't use the parks internet. The satellite tv worked and that was all the outside world I cared to have at the time...

Satellite tv........what's that?????? We don't even have an autopilot.

Amapola was commenting on the cost for internet. You know, where some of us get marine weather, get email, pay bills, update blogs, etc.

Satellite tv is what you watch while the auto pilot is driving the boat...

And as to internet cost, I offered my thoughts (limited though they were) on BTC.

Re: New Exuma Land and Sea Park Mooring Rates

Pretty sure the park internet is from a satellite, which isn't cheap. And it's slow. And it's also a source of much needed income. I spent a day using their internet connection and got less done than if I had a dial up connection in the states.
But like georgetown, most of the days "entertainment" comes from listening to the vhf...

Re: New Exuma Land and Sea Park Mooring Rates

I'm glad I was able to experience the park before they put so many restrictions on anchoring. If I want to pay to moor with many other boats, I'd go to the BVIs. Now I'm happy to make the park a short stop or skip it all together.

Re: New Exuma Land and Sea Park Mooring Rates

Yes, we asked the office about securing internet while anchored in the park. The answer was that we must be on a park mooring to obtain access.

Their internet signal sucks and doesnt work half the time anyways. Maybe they will use the increase in funds to clean up some of the islands

Re: New Exuma Land and Sea Park Mooring Rates

Sad to say the park doesn't have much income. I was told that, while the bahamian government loves to tell the world about their nature conservancy efforts, their actual contribution to the park is $2000 per year.

Re: New Exuma Land and Sea Park Mooring Rates

The National Trust is having a difficult time raising money so they just raise the mooring fees so the boaters will help raise more funds. Look for things to get more expensive. On our last visit we felt like we were back in Florida. If you want to anchor, you have to do it only in wide open areas with little protection. If you want internet service you have to take a mooring. If they need to pay for internet, why not just charge a daily fee instead of requiring the mooring. We just felt like if we didn't pay for a mooring we weren't welcome. A big change from our early visits over the years. The land and Sea park has been one of our favorite places over the years but this time we felt like just another money source. Spend or move on. Others may disagree, but that was the impression we came away with. Chuck
