Port of Spain, Trinidad safety notice

Anyone currently familiar with social conditions in Trinidad? Thinking of heading that way and looking at a boat for sale in one of the marinas. The US state department travel advisory for Trinidad is not very encouraging, particularily warning about violent crime and visiting PortOF Spain. Anybody spent time there recently and able to comment on current safety issues?

Thanks
Glenn B.

Re: Port of Spain, Trinidad safety notice

The marinas in Trinidad are in Chaguarmas, not Port of Spain.

In our stay there (Chaguarmas) we had no crime problems nor were we warned or alerted to any either in Chag or in the capital, Port of Spain. We visited there during the day and evening.

However, in any of the very poor nations of the Caribbean there are people who are desperate. We, as visiting yachtspersons, are a target. Be careful, do not flaunt your wealth and be watchful. Renting a car is better than walking.

Chances are the boat is in Chaguaramas. If so and if you are flying in to look at it, check Power Boats, they have rooms for rent and you can stay right where the marinas are for a reasonable price.

Could you give a link to Power Boats? - can't see one in your post.
