Provincetown to Nova Scotia

Hi All!

I'm planning to sail from P-Town to the East Coast of Nova Scotia and back July 1-10. I'm looking for advice from anyone has that has done this passage before. We're on a Saga 43. I've been warned about fog. We've got AIS and Radar. I would love to be in contact with any other boats making that passage, anyone else headed that way!?

Re: Provincetown to Nova Scotia

An automatically actuated fog horn would be a great conveyance. We found it very handy along the east cost of NS during July. Many of the local fishing boats will not have AIS. The fog can be thick, and can come and go rapidly.

From P-town to NS and back in ten days? I hope that's got a bit of wiggle room in it. A week and a half leaves you very, very little flexibility to adapt to weather. It is the kind of tight schedule that can get boats into trouble.

Also, if you haven't done this before, although they are infallibly polite, the Canadians Customs officials are very serious about incoming vessels going STRAIGHT to an official port of entry No stops, no anchoring, until you are cleared in. Expect them to call up your AIS history. Be sure you make your plans accordingly.

We have the ability to work remote and extend the trip if the weather doesn't cooperate so we do have some flexibility.

Do you have any suggestions on best ports of entry?

Where, in NS, do you plan to enter?

With your tight schedule (10 days),I suggest your only choice is Provincetown direct to Shelburne,N.S.(Port of entry).-a crow fly distance of 280 mi. or so.
