Sending boat from New York to Caribbean

I wantt o cruise the Caribbean and the Atlantic coast of the US but doing a roundtrip starting in NY would be impossible given the 1.5-2 month restraint I have. A better option (in my mind) is to send the boat down to the keys or to Puerto Rico and sail back up North, riding the Gulf Stream.

Has anyone sent a boat down south and sailed it back up? Do you recommend putting it on a ship or getting a captain to sail it down?

I want to do the trip starting in May 2014
My boat is a Beneteau First 305

Thank you for helping.

I agree w/ Boatman, and also would recommend you hire him. He's one of the best, and he'd take good care of it for you.

I think getting it to FL or the Bahamas is a great start. If I were you, I would just do the bahamas on a 2 month trip... why beat your brains out? relax, enjoy the best cruising in the islands.

I tend to agree with Cheechako. This is a long trip both ways with a 305. In winter you should not sail it directly from NY to PR. And going via Florida is twice the distance.

Sailing from the Bahamas to NY in May, should be interesting.
