Shortest vessel to sail the Atlantic - Big C Atlantic Challenge

Andrew Bedwell is planning to smash the record for sailing the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic. His vessel, Big C is just over 1meter / 3.2ft long.

Link to video of the ship's sea trials.

interesting...

so how does that rudder extension figure into the 1m length?

after seeing it drift..err, i mean sail..

hopefully there is a lot of hidden storage for food and water.

that's gonna be a long trip..

I am left wondering if he needs crew to join him on this misadventure.

Anyone wishing to volunteer, to be the second mate or galley cook?

Re: Shortest vessel to sail the Atlantic - Big C Atlantic Challenge

If using the 55% of boat length calculation for the wave height which can capsize this vessel, he is going to have to cross the Atlantic in waves no higher 55cm or about 22 inches. Using the formula
Quote:
Capsize Screening Formula = Beam / ((Displacement/64.2)1/3)
gives a miserable value.
Assuming a manual watermaker and carrying energy-dense food at ~500kCal per 100g and 3000 kCal consumption per day that means 600g per day minimum. So call it 20Kg for 30 days - that might fit in there; but his digestive system isn't going to like it
Making water by hand will consume about 2 hours of pumping per day. I guess that would give him time to contemplate and build up that upper-body strength.

He says wind is 25 knots, but the sails are not filling and there is not a semblance of a whitecap.

Yes, it is an older story from last year.

He is expected to start in May (2023) from St John’s, Newfoundland to Lizard Point, Cornwall (~1900nm taking ~ two months).

Makes me cramp up just looking at that small space for just a couple of days let alone 2 months.

Seriously, what's the point ??
Get into the record books ??

The north Atlantic is going to give him a thumping and a rude awakening.

What does he use for a head.....probably nothing.....a balancing act on the hatch ??
The mind boggles at the thought.
Those red canisters alongside is apparently where he stows his food.

I've got 2c he will likely need to be rescued somewhere along the trip.

Nuts, completely nuts !!
