Spring Transit - Gulf/Tampa to USVI

Hi All, new to the forum and glad to be aboard! I am planning a March crossing from GOM/Tampa to the USVI. Untethered is a 60' monohull Cutter Rig and she makes 200 to 250miles a day. I was looking for some routing advice/experiences.

No required departure/arrival times or limit to the trip for offshore days or stops...so (assuming COVID does not get in the way), any suggestions on route or best layovers along the way? Bahamas, Turks, Dominican, Puerto Rico?

Appreciate any experience for this voyage and recommendations, or warnings on routes and stops.

Thanks!!

Welcome to CF.

It depends on the forecast and fuel capacity. It can be “over the top” heading between Nassau and Freeport to 65, or south- perhaps going through the Windward or Mona pass. Either way with a boat that size you will need to go around Key West.

If you are interested in hiring someone, please check my website (link in my profile).

Re: Spring Transit - Gulf/Tampa to USVI

I made the passage from Miami to USVI back in November over Thanksgiving with a great crew of 5. The southern route between cuba/bahamas was really the only choice in my window. The northeast winds blew 10-25 most of the way past DR and the Mona passage (Gregory caught a beautiful wahoo there) to southern PR and our first stop at Vieques on the 7th night. 8th day brought us to USVI on a fun and relatively uneventful trip.
