Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

I came across this thread recently.

I did not know that such an event even existed.

I've read about various unusual ocean crossings before, but never on this scale

Part of me would like to do it, but sanity tells me otherwise.

Think you should give it a try and let us know how it goes!!

Then if you like it, you could try the Pacific race.

It seems to me that the craft they use for this particular adventure has a fair amount of storage room for beer...so yeah, some possibility exists that I could be coaxed into doing an adventure like this...some of these raft have 4 men crews....I'd volunteer to be the bartender...

Re: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

I provided a safety boat to a group oh a decade ago whilst training. Some had been working hard in the gym for the winter, the rest hadn't. With two rowing they could just about manage a sustained 2-3 knots for those who were fit, the rest quickly lagged behind. Their original training plans had to be drastically altered when we saw this as the Solent was far too busy to go wandering about the main shipping channels with lots of commercial traffic.

Ocean sailing is tough enough in a yacht for my liking.

Re: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

As someone who used to get paid to row, I can say there will be many calories burned in that event, therefore I can endorse McHughV's call to stock plenty of beer.
My dad always talked of his dream to row a dory down the California coast... I caught his dreams, and then realized how much easier it was to sail.

That might do in a pinch then.

Re: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

In my youth....I had, what we called a wave ski, kinda like a surfboard with paddles. Off course, being poor as a church mouse, I had to fabricate my own.

It required intense paddling for relatively short periods of time whilst one attempted to catch a wave.

I could manage an hour or two of this activity, before it felt like my arms were going to fall off.

Doing this around the clock for 40 odd days is a mighty feat. I've read that these paddlers sometimes had to deal with head seas and wind and despite furious rowing, would make only 4 miles in a day.

Re: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

Let’s see, 40 days, I’m sure in the interest of safety the single malt would not be awarded until the end of the race on the opposite shore so, again for the sake of safety, I’ll offer to maintain watch over the prize……..safety first

It is a great challenge and well organised to all that compete in it.

Re: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

I wonder if CF will sponsor a boat ??

If no age limit, I'd give it a shot.

Re: Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge

The bathroom facilities appear to be quite basic.....seems like a bucket and chuckit affair. You may even have to " wait your turn"

Sleeping accommodations look iffy at best.

On a boat with 12 rowers, it appears you will become intimately familiar with your fellow rowers. From the link above, it seems like it's a mixed team of rowers, men and women, on the same boat. I did note one grey head rower, so there's hope.
