Using Verizon in USVI

Apologies if this has been covered before, but if so, my search did not find it.

I have an iphone with a Verizon plan, and was wondering if I will be able to communicate with crew, via text at least, when I am at Cruz Bay St, John and they are on St. Thomas. Is anyone here experienced with this and can tell me if I need to get a SIM card, Travel Pass, or whatever?

Thank you

Thank you seahag. Simple question but it will make a big difference in connecting with crew between the two islands. Definitely good news.

Re: Using Verizon in USVI

I just had a slightly different experience back in February. I have ATT and it worked flawlessly. Other members of our group had Verizon and they had a hard time keeping a consistent data connection with access to the internet.

One thing to make sure is that you are enabled for international roaming. There seem to be instances cruising around STJ where the strongest tower was in the BVI and we would get connected to a tower over there resulting in an alert that we being charged for an international day pass.

Here is a blurb from the charter company…
Most U.S. carriers have reception here, but ATT is the carrier of choice. Check with your provider prior to departure to determine if there are special plans available for voice and text while in the USVIs and the BVIs.

You’ll have internet access from the boat about half the time, usually in the evenings, and on pretty much any island with a bar (which is pretty much any island.)
