Virgin Islands to Grenada in early August

I have seen a couple other threads on this but hoping to get some fresh dialogue. My family has been invited to sail from Virgin Islands to Grenada first 2 weeks in August to get boat south for hurricane season. It seems clear that first of August is actually in hurricane season. I would love thoughts on how/if this can be done safely. Thanks in advance.

It can be done safely if there are no active storms that get in the way. The storm activity in August is greater than it is in June, but not as great as it is in September. There is actually no way to predict whether or not your plans will be interrupted by a tropical storm (or worse). IMO, leaving in early August for Grenada is a bit late.

Re: Virgin Islands to Grenada in early August

Always some risk that time of year. How much do you trust the boat owner's judgement? What weather tracking stuff does he use?
These low cells start to form off the coast of Africa and are pretty visible as potential storms very early most often.
Many dont become storms at all. But there may be up to a half dozen of them developing at any given time. It can take a week for them to arrive if they are still well east. By then you could be well toward Grenada.

But you are on a schedule, schedules always seem to create risky judgment.
Is the intention just a delivery? In that situation you can high tail it south safely.
If you are vacationing with anchored stays then the risk goes up. Maybe it's best to move quickly for a week then relax at or near Grenada.

You can do it, but it will be a last minute call on if the weather is safe to go. Tropical waves are doable, but not comfortable.
