We also did quite a lot of work ourselves, replacing the standing rigging, new loo, solar installation, manual water pumps, new batteries etc. Episode 2 of our videos has more detail.

We sold the previous dinghy but kept the engine and put it on our (second hand) walker bay. All in all the refit cost about £4-5k but everything we did was worth it and we've come out with a great little liveaboard boat
cool,, have you just done the 3 vids ?

Hi Alex, you must have a sixth sense as he has just been in contact, he tells me he did exactly as you suggested and sailed/ Motored south for the first two days which gave him a decent track to Port Vila!
He just posted their message on FB here it is!
Cheers.

post from simon sv narvhal
Tuvulu to Vanuatu
(Funafuti Atoll to Port Vila)

It's hard to get your hands on fresh fruit and vegetables in Funafuti so the canned tradition continued as we loaded up on tinned pears and baked beans.

The refuelling was both amusing and painstaking as we waited 6 hours for such a task to be accomplished.
We mused at the concept of "Island time" and then what became apparent as "no concept of linear time".

It gave us time to contemplate life by the wayside and make friends with the fuel guy (who's truck had mysteriously disappeared to some unknown location on the island, along with our diesel!) and after we'd both suffered food poisoning and had no fresh fruit or veg for almost another month (apart from coconuts), we were aching to leave for Vanuatu.

We waved goodbye to the incredible Funafuti, with an exchange of rice for coconuts and navigated out of the south entrance of the Atoll.

We were hoping for a nice quick crossing, after all it's only 800 miles!

Pulling up our newly repaired, big head sail (the prisoners did a superb job stitching her up), we were off again! [emoji846]

In light winds the headsail works perfectly; we manage 6 knots in less than 10 knots of breeze!
The first few days were perfect, seas to 1m and winds not above 15 knots.

Ideal blue skies and perfect sailing conditions!!

We tried to head south more as we had some strong winds and bigger seas coming later in the week.
We ended up sailing a further 100 miles south. That should give us a better angle for Vanuatu.

4 days into our passage....
We put a double reef in the main sail, pull down our No.1 and put up a small jib and storm sail on the cutter.
We are flying along.. 6..7....8 knots !!
The swell is really starting to pick up, 3 meters and an occasional breaking wave over our decks!!

Thursday morning,6 days into our passage...GPS is saying only 24 hours to Vanuatu!!

Seas are over 3 meters and breaking, wind is still 25knots and showing no signs of easing...
We are still making over 7 knots. Narhval is loving this, the decks are a constant wash, we both hide below as it's not very safe outside.
In fact we've been down below now for 3 days, we just keep reminding ourselves that it's only a 7 day passage not 31!!
That reassures us and we relax back in to it.

Narhval is jumping all around, but her movements are so predictable and in slow motion. Waves crashing all over her, over the bow, both middle and aft cabin.

We realised this morning that neither of us has had a hot shower since Garden Bay Marina, British Columbia (back in June!!!)
The revelation that in less than 24 hours we will be having hot showers is absolutely overwhelming!!!

Fresh fruit and vegetables AND a hot shower? Now that's just luxurious!!!!

Yep, working on the 4th at the moment, while we're holed up in Peniche. The fog in Portugal has been a bit of a pain, and keeps stopping us in our tracks.

yes fog is a problem at this time of year, especially when there is no wind or light winds.
it should get better the further south you get,at least as far as cadiz where it is very common in the straights again.

is your wheel pilot not working?

I'm currently sailing in the EU, well the Med but still.

I can make a bunch of videos of me sitting around getting drunk, going on Tinder dates, and lazing about as while my boat falls apart around me, if that's what you'd prefer

Re: Vlogging, Atlantic Crossing 2016 and upcoming 2017

Haha, don't encourage me.

Highlights would be being invited out a girl on a super yacht once her boyfriend was out of town. Sinking my Mavic Pro, sailing 200mn to Sardinia without proper steering, having tequilas with Chris Rock then getting thrown out of an Irish bar in Ibiza and waking up at 7pm the next day. Dropping a £400 micronet display in the marina. Getting a handbag stuck on the spreaders (still there). Dating a Mallorcan girl. Being crashed into four times while at anchor. Saving a 15m monohull, and being rewarded with a 1l bottle of rum.

I've only been cruising since June.

It's independence day here in Malta. Heading out shortly. Think I'll leave the video camera onboard.

Fair winds my fellow live-aboard cruisers.

I'm sure by now many of you who have YouTube accounts have realized that if you had less than 10,000 lifetime views on your channel your monetization has vanished. Back in April of 2017 YouTube announced that they were going to make this change to stop people from copying other's content and getting paid from views on their channels.
So Let's get this right? YouTube is saying that those with over 10,000 views don't steal content? Or maybe, they're saying that those with less than 10,000 views steal content? I just don't get it.
YouTube more than has the resources to check every video for copyright content and partner with BMG, BMI, and every other greedy group out there to remove your content because some lousy song was playing in the background while you were trying to record original content.
Life happens right? I just can't see people working so hard to make sure that there isn't anything on a TV in the room or playing on a radio at the red light. Get a life YouTube and stop hurting the little guy so you can continue to run ads in their channel without paying them for their work."quote

something for vloggers to take note of if they want revenue from their videos, indirectly it should promote coverage on platforms like facebook and cruisersforum etc as vloggers endeavour to get their view count per video above 10k

.sailing channels are really small potatoes on youtube as they in reality have a very small viewership .

IMHO it would be a loss for the sailing community if these independent producers end up not producing due to the new restrictions on revenue.

the least we can do as a community is to click like and subscribe,it costs nothing, but shows that this type of sailing video has a following.
