where to leave a boat in the Bahamas for couple weeks

Our boat is currently in Puerto Rico and in May-June we want to sail across Bahamas to Florida and points North. We are looking for a place where we could leave her for couple weeks, to take a break and fly to US, preferably under guardianship at a good mooring, preferably at a place with good flight connecyions to US.

We had good experience doing this at Grenada and St. Martin.
Any advice for such a place?

Re: where to leave a boat in the Bahamas for couple weeks

I left my boat at Leeward Yacht Club for Dec-Feb., she was just fine. Leeward is in Black Sound on Green Turtle Cay, with hourly ferry service to Treasure, where you can catch a flight, or you can take a cab from there to Marsh Harbor for a flight. Donnie's Marina has a mooring field in Black sound, as well. I have friends who have had their boat on a ball for 2 months now. Hope that helps.

Coming into hurricane season,so mooring out may be tricky for your insurance carrier. Best to keep her on the hard. Suggest Bradford Yacht Service on Grand Bahama, quick access to daily air service to Lauderdale, Atlanta, Charlotte

There's a well sheltered marina in San Juan harbor called Club Nautico. It's about a 20 minute cab ride from there to San Juan airport. I've no experience with it but it's work a look (and probably isn't cheap).

Moorings in Hope town, Man o war, or Green Turtle Cay. All should be safe for a couple of weeks absent a hurricane...

would you risk leaving a boat on the mooring without a guardianship agreement with someone living on a boat nearby?

We left out boat for a couple of weeks during huricane season at the St. Francis "resort" just across from George Town. They are a sales center for St. Francis Catamarans.. so we trusted their mooring for our boat.

I would also suggest you factor into the decision your plans after returning to the boat. If you plan to spend more time in the Bahamas then you should look for places farther east and/or south so you don't have to turn around and beat a long way back to where you want to cruise.

Nassau comes to mind for that option.

We can heartily recommend Flamingo Bay Marina in the Lucaya/Taino Beach area of Freeport. Left our boat there for a couple weeks over this past Christmas. VERY reasonable rate (water included!) and well protected. As a bonus you get access to the neighbouring resort with pool, restaurant, beach, etc. Book early - they’re small & popular.

Re: where to leave a boat in the Bahamas for couple weeks

There are many safe places to do this, marina or moorings. Georgetown for well sheltered moorings, marinas in too many places to list. Depends on your budget and where you want to cruise afterwards as mentioned. Abacos nice that time of year but a bit at the end so to speak as is Lucaya. Prevailing winds are SE. Few cold fronts to help out that late. Most boats will have left by then so lots of room. Someone said Georgetown, where we are now, is down to fifty from something like 300 earlier.

We were told Chub, empty when we were there in January, fills up with large power boats for the fishing this time of year.

Also at the 'end'

It is very expensive, 3.50/ft.
