Re: Yellow flagging the Bahamas?

Gotta enjoy it while we can. Normans Cay is changing this year.

What if I were ( for arguments sake) one of those "keep the change" types?

What's afoot on Normans?

Extending the runway. Scuttlebutt has it that Turkish money is moving in. Apparently quite a bit of construction right now. I have seen this two or three times at Normans. One year they moved half a dozen housing trailers in started something then they sat there for a few years, stripped and rusted out. Finally they were towed to the dump. Once they were flying in prospects in choppers every other day it seemed. Frankly I hope the latest venture goes bust too. Seen it happen quite a few time on different cays. Look at Royal Island. Jack Nicklaus golf course etc. etc. Then nothing. Now I see they're advertising five cottages. I was there when they first started up with Roger Staubach's company. Tons of money, construction, even brought in a boatload of full sized palm trees. Then it went tits up.

Recent years[edit]

The island was again a subject of (minor) controversy when the newly elected Progressive Liberal government honoured a pre-election in-principle agreement to sell the government-owned portion of the island, valued at $40.5 million, despite the objections of the local MP. The government believes it may encourage further foreign investment.[4]
The island's consortium of local and foreign owners including Bahamians Mark Holowesko, Martin Solomon, Greg Cleare and James Cole, and US investor J. Steven Manolis and Jonathan Breene had planned to include resort chain Aman Resorts[citation needed]. The island has purportedly sold to the Miami-based Fort Capital Group[citation needed].

Could mean the island will become a privately owned resort, run by an international resort group.

Re: Yellow flagging the Bahamas?

What I saw first hand, last week, was a lot of activity. The runway has been widened. Fast progress is being made on a new marina. Two supply ships visited while we were there. The bar is closed.

Maybe it will end up Samson Cay. This year there are no services there. A big "go away private property" sign has been erected.

Workers told me "arab" people had bought the island and were building an International airport and resort.

The steps up to the house on the hill with the well have been obscured and partially destroyed by the workers camp. I would bet the house and well will not be there next year.

Re: Yellow flagging the Bahamas?

MacDuffs has been closed since last year. It was impossible to make a profit there. I do not believe the new owners can prevent anchoring there. The beauty of Normans is the whole area, not just the dock and beach . They can get rid of the old Carlos Leder Clubhouse. They may stop you from going ashore there but they don't own the whole area. There are lots of places to dink to from Normans, good hunting spots. It's the Bahamas, the more thing change the more they remain the same.

Interesting.
Who knows, maybe this will turn out beneficial for cruisers - new marina, services, airport... I guess it will depend on the vision of new private owners and their attitude towards cruising community. If someone could give them the right idea...

Re: Yellow flagging the Bahamas?

Been too long since I've been to Normans, I think 2003. Plan to be that way next winter.

No doubt Exumas will be developed further, but certainly sea level rise will be a crub long term.
