As I always say, people like to exaggerate to make them feel better because they got scared and they probably think of them as good mariners and if they got scared must have been really something

How in the world do they prepare meals and keep them down under those conditions?

Isn't the wave height 11.40m as usually measured?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Significant_wave_height

This measures the mean of the highest 1/3 of waves.

Which means most of the waves in the video are likely smaller than that.

What am I missing?

Are you unable to simply enjoy the video?

Re: 21 Meter Waves, Yikes!

You aren't missing anything... the only thing missing is the 20 metre waves..

They may have been out and about on the day... just not in the vid...

Consider the pic here.. https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais...PIAN_CONTENDER
The ship is 44 metres long.... by inspection the top of her mast is slightly less than 20 metres above the sea... did the vid show any waves that high... that were towering above the bridge? No it did not....

I suggest you get your eyes checked or put on your readers, then watch the video again with an open mind. I see the waves rising way above the bridge deck and obscuring the horizon several times during the short video, as I’m sure 99% of the people watching the video also see.

Please try again, good luck.

FYI: I posted the video for enjoyment.... not for debate. I couldn’t care any less whether or not the waves are 18, 19, 20 or 21 meters high, they’re still HUGE. IMHO.

Please try again, good luck.

My eyes ? they are fine - thank you for asking. You seem to have forgotten what my day job was........ Ooooh ... look !!! 20 metre seas!!!!!

Re: 21 Meter Waves, Yikes!

Ship was in rough patch no doubt especially going against waves. But 20m wave was not on the video.

As mentioned before, I have gone thru similar conditions, but was reaching. It is rough and my wife hardly managed to prepare hot meals. Actually we relied on couple of cold packages.

Re: 21 Meter Waves, Yikes!

The electronics display seems to counter the 20m sea argument...looks more like 11m by normal measure.

Saw that once (from shore) on Lake Michigan. Sitting maybe 20-30' up on a sand dune...watched as the 40' CG boat went out the channel and promptly started disappearing from view in the troughs. First chance they could they made a hard U-turn (I thought they were going to roll the boat) and shot back in the channel at full throttle. The forecast online said it was 30' seas.

It would take some time for those seas to abate. I would end up having to eat dry bread and water for days..... the galley and I are not friends in big seas.

The video is good to watch while having a coffee in a chair that isn’t moving.

I'm glad you enjoyed it as I did; a few on here seem to be having some difficulty doing the same and just like to argue and poke fun.

I'm presently having my morning coffee in a chair that isn't moving. Cheers.

Personally, I don't really care to know what your day job happens to be; I just thought I'd share a video that I enjoyed with the general membership here on CF.

Cheers.

Thats called going downhill..
The thing in dispute is not the video which folks can wow about in their armchairs.. rather the title.. 21 metre waves.. which I agree they are not.. hence my remark, the smaller the boat the smaller the waves seem..
Enjoy your Boxing Day leftover turkey etc..
Just finished my roasted goat marinaded in port wine..
