I know the obvious, but other than cooler weather, what are the disadvantages to going south to the keys in January. leaving NC on or about 2 January and coming back mid May. I have been called out of retirement to do a special project and it want be finished till late Nov. and with the holidays that close can't see leaving until after the 1st. I have installed a cockpit enclosure but no cabin heater. What would be different in January that other wise i wouldn't encounter in Nov.

None that I can think of. Cold for the first week or so assuming you travel the ICW. Cold and probably bouncy for a few days if you go offshore.
Me, I'd go the ICW, with any luck have enough northerly breeze to do some sailing even if jib only.
