Use the G209A - also see if you can go 2 sizes up - I can with my 5/16" G70 (7/16" shackle)

Re: 5/16" G4 HT Gal Anchor Chain

Skipmac, I've recently had a lot of dealing with Canada Metal. I became a Rocna / Vulcan dealer. They are a first class company to do business with and their products look good. I'm concerned about the made in China thing but they've about got me convinced that there quality control is top notch. They own the factory in China and have a continuous presence there.

I'm thinking about bringing in their Titan chain but I'm worried that even if it's terrific chain, it won't sell because of the China thing.

Chinese paranoia is a concern. I deal with it a lot in my business. As I said, China can make some excellent products but you have to be careful. If Canada Metals is closely overseeing the production and QC then they could be coming out with good stuff. Considering the several horror stories I've read lately about Acco chain seems like US made is no longer a good guarantee for quality chain.

Glad you are volunteering to be a guinea pig and test the Titan chain. Look forward to your reports on how it holds up.

I work at Trotac in Victoria B.C. We sell Titan chain and have for some years. The galvanizing is good and the chain is very consistent in quality. We have sold Acco but their quality is not as good - both as far as galvanizing and some inconsistent welds.

Canada Metal knows galvanizing very well - they also own the Martyr brand of anodes - one of if not the largest in the world.

For shackles Titan are a good choice and are rated. Crosby is the gold standard of course but more expensive - we also sell these.

Someone mentioned Wichard shackles - I don't think they make galvanized shackles, only stainless. I would not use stainless in an anchoring system.

Greg

I have a similar experience here in SD year or so ago. I went to a local crane rigging company and they priced 3/8 BBB at something right around $2.50/foot for the ACCO brand. At West Marine the 3/8 BBB is like $6.50/foot. I found the price to good to believe (didn't have to have new chain at time either) and passed. I basically didn't think they were really selling "American" chain. Now reading the stories about newly purchased ACCO not being that awesome make me think I made a good decision.

Yeti-

I can't say anything about ACCO quality at this point, although I think my 23 year old chain is ACCO (but perhaps Campbell - not the greatest memory at this point). I seriously doubt that your rigging company is selling counterfeit chain; the price difference is the result of the different channels. If a rigging company gets complaints about a supplier's products they would change suppliers - industrial users of rigging products won't put up with defective products for long.
