I skipped a few pages on this thread ..... I can’t believe you ditched your boat on the shore and ran off......

I understand your shock and scorn, but to be fair, you weren't there, and the OP was inexperienced. In his shoes most folks would have done the same, probably. He had just survived a very dicey situation and was (1) totally stressed out, and (2) darn glad to have his feet on terra firma instead of terror fury. And he knows better, now, I would say.

Re: A new adventure begins.

This guy said it as well as I could have.

Yes I feel dumb for losing the boat, yes this will cause many years delay before I can try again, yes I know now that if I had turned to sea I might have made it.... or better if I had turned to sea 10 or 15 miles back I probably wouldn't have gotten into trouble, but until you are literally hanging on a nearly capsized boat with a vertical deck you wont understand my decision and I can't explain it.

For what it's worth, your candor and honesty in telling this story, almost real time, will be a service to the community for years to come. I know I've got a lot to learn (hope I never feel like I can stop learning) and feel like I learned much from reading your saga. Thanks for that.

You survived, lost a lot of money relative to your situation, and made an expensive mess for someone to clean up.

Any of us could lose a boat and/or die at sea, but your situation was entirely avoidable.

If you do it again, do you have any intention of gaining some experience first?

An after thought: Did you transfer title of the boat into your name? If not, the previous owner could be in for a little surprise!

Re: A new adventure begins.

I suspect after Park Police has or will pay a salvage company to remove the wreck (and they probably won't shop around). Then they will track down the OP with the full resource of the US Government. Hopefully no oil or fuel spilled. If they didn't get his ID when he beached they'll find the registered owner, if not the OP, who will provide them with the Bill of Sale and readily identify the OP. Maybe they'll get it from the hotel or rental car company. I don't know how relentless they might be but I do know the Park Police don't play when it comes to protecting National Park land.

If OP has the minimum insurance necessary for getting a slip in most marinas, then his salvage and removal should cover it.

BTW that sure is a nice big sow in your avatar pic. We used to save one like that for thanksgiving dinner on the boat. Stuff it and bake it under aluminum foil tent, like a turkey.

Re: A new adventure begins.

I speared that Red Snapper on a gas well off Galveston. I don't think the OP had insurance except Tow Boats and apparently beaching the boat is not covered.

I believe they specify soft groundings.

Re: A new adventure begins.

OK, I thought the beaching of the boat was a poster other than the OP.
