Re: Advice for relocating the family (USA)

Very southern Chesapeake. Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News area. Nice marinas, plenty of people, etc. weather typically fantastic just north of North Carolina and great sailing. We sail down every year and love it. Just my .02

Oregon is lovely. The Olympics National Park is breath taking but so is the whole west coast.

That northern corner's got lots of crinkly bits...

Yes, just like searching for a good boat, gets easier as the choices to compare get fewer

I see recommendations for Puget Sound and then places like Anacortes, Port Townsend, and Bellingham being listed. None of these places are located on Puget Sound!

I agree. San Diego has decent public transportation, significant dedicated bike lanes, and an active sailing scene. The weather is second to none in the US There are a lot of county parks and access to outdoor activities. Downside is SD proper has a serious homeless problem, and it's expensive. With exception of PNW and Sacramento Delta area of SF Bay, cruising options are limited along the west coast.

Geography correct, most of us refer to the Area as Salish Sea.
But, more relate to the more populated places as Puget Sound, and that's correct as its about half of the entire area.

You do have Catalina and the Channel Islands, all of which are great sailing destinations for a long weekend. Not really daysailing distance though. I used to sail a dinghy out of Marina del Rey, just heading offshore a few miles and zig-zagging around. Sometimes going nowhere at all is the best therapy.

Sorry. This is about geography. Salish Sea would've been accurate for the places I mentioned, but Puget Sound is not.

While many may refer to all the inland marine waters of Washington as "Puget Sound", that simply doesn't make it so.

A partial list of places to sail to in Southern California:

Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Barbara Ventura, Chanel Islands/Oxnard, Santa Barbara Island, Paradise Cove/Malibu, Catalina Island/Avalon/Isthmus Cove/Cat Harbor/etc., Marina del Ray, San Pedro, Long Beach, Alamitos Bay, Newport Beach, Dana Point, Oceanside, Mission Bay, Shelter Island Basin, Glorietta Bay, Chula Vista.

So what do you want? Remote anchorages? Busy developed tourist attractions? Access to marine services? Consistent moderate winds? Moderate sunny weather?

I think you've described your opinion.
Thanks!
