ColinIOM, That's a very informative post. Thank you. I learned something today.

This all matches some (bit not all) the info I've found in my searches so one would think that I have the right belt.

However, the last belt shed lots of rubber and died after only 50 hours. This time around, I noticed that the new belt doesn't really seem to fit in the alternator pulley (see pic)

I found on one thread that someone is using a 10mm belt from Gates. That is considerably thinner than the belt I have but might be a better fit for the alternator pulley. Can someone confirm that this would work?
Not sure what you paid for your boat, but why would you want to say a couple dollars by buying a non-OEM Yanmar belt? This belt is critical since it charges your battery.

Just looked up the price of a YANMAR belt for this engine at my local yanmar parts dealer. $11.32. I would buy original yanmar parts for this.

Colin's got it right. The belt is the right width. The pulleys are likely corroded. Every year when I launch my boat I have the same problem. You need to sand the pulleys smooth.

Re: Alternator belt for yanmar 3gm30f

My issue wasn't that yanmar was too expensive. It was that it didn't seem to fit the pulley on the alternator. Since I decided to upgrade the alternator pulley, I can go with the oem belt.

That said, I don't know if I trust a belt sold as OEM any more than any other belt. These days I assume that everything I buy is made with chinesium anyway.

Pulley arrived early. Definitely a better fit for the standard yanmar belt.

That looks too wide for that belt
Does the belt get any where near the bottom of the pulley

Re: Alternator belt for yanmar 3gm30f

Doesn't look like the belt will touch down on the bottom. Also the fit now looks just like the main pulley. Looks way better than the original to me.

Now to figure out how to check the alignment.

I believe that yanmar reccomends a max of somewhere around 80A due to sideload. Research before buying.

I used a steel ruler and vernier to check the alignment

Good morning folks, thanks tkeithlu, “ you learn something new every day and when you stop, you die”
That pulley looks like great quality and the belt is not supposed to get to the bottom of the vee, it’s supposed to drive on the sides of the vee (im sure most people know this, just stating facts for anyone who doesn’t)
Good luck

Been running this 150A alt with an external Balmar regulator ARS-5 for 10+ years..no issues..Which by the way has a ‘belt saving’ program mode
