Amel Super Maramu dyneema rigging

Hey all,

I’m carefully considering an Amel Super Maramu.

One of the major things moving forward (as it’s a larger boat and older) is to ensure maintenance is achievable anywhere and by me.

This leads me to dyneema / synthetic standing rigging as a preferable choice over stainless as the positives that come with the ease of replacement / strength etc.

There are a number of tricky areas unusual to most boats on the SM mainly the holes for supporting out the poles starboard and port side of the main mast and the stainless bar that’s attached to the rigging.

My question is, does anyone know of an Amel SM that has converted to dyneema / synthetic rigging? Is it doable? Does dyneema / synthetic offer an option to attach stainless bars via clamp onto it?

Thanks,
J

There's no rule that every shroud has to be the same material. You could replace some with synthetic and leave others SS.

I've put dyneema rigging on previous boats. But with that said, SS rigging is about the most long lasting maintenance free thing on a sailboat. You can easily cruise ten years or more without ever touching it. How is going synthetic going to be an improvement?

The way I do it is to keep my SS standing rigging and carry a dyneema emergency shroud.

Thanks for the response, good redundancy carrying a spare dyneema shroud.

Cost is a main factor & maybe risk of poor quality SS in remote areas.

Thanks,

Also, SSwire is quite easy to diy using the various good brands of compression fittings - no more difficult than dyneema.

Dyneema is easier to stow on board for emergency use, but you can do that while having SS in primary use.

Re: Amel Super Maramu dyneema rigging

I rerigged my trimaran in Dyneema working solo. I found it a pleasure to work with and like the feel of it. True it is necessary to re-tension as the new Dyneema stretches and sets but you end up with a better feel for how much tension you have in the lines as opposed to SS. Main reason I changed over was to get rid of possible fatigue or corrosion crack failures which arrive unannounced in barrel fittings, turnbuckles, etc. and scare the hell out of me. Dyneema is known to give fair warning before failure as it will start stretching again at end of life but you want to change it out before that happens or before it gets too fuzzy. Both obvious warnings that are in your face. I don't believe there is a consensus for definitive life span of Dyneema. In my mind it depends more on UV exposure, abrasion, time in the tropics, etc. I am no expert, just a user with 12 yrs of using it.

Good question, maybe you can protect the area around potential chafe points, maybe even ss tube and lashing them, they are a stuffy group but you could try the

How about splicing a stainless bar into the Dyneema shroud which you could then attach to. A couple of eye splices in thimbles to the rounded ends of the bar might work.

Going synthetic gets rid of a lot of above deck weight. That means your boat stands up straighter, which means it sails better and rolls less. It is also not reflective of radio waves.

I agree that if you want really AMEL specific feedback it is better to go to the AYOG Forum. Maybe a "stuffy" group but you get feedback from real AMEL owners or previous AMEL owners which are bound to a civil code of conduct in their communications otherwise they will be blocked from the Group.
