Are cruising guides dead?

We've been part time liveaboards for a little over 2 years now and have so far done the great lakes and chessapeak. I've bought several cruising guides for the various great lakes as well as the erie canal and barely even looked at any of them. It feels like I get better, more current, and more accurate information from active captain than from any of the guides. As we get ready to hit the bahamas this fall I am wondering if they are even worth getting anymore

Am I alone in this or am I missing something?
