Are People Becoming More Ignorant ?

We were recently anchored in blackwattle bay, Sydney. I was down in the galley making a morning coffee when I heard a "CLACK" from the hull somewhere forward. While i was still thinking "what was that" there was another "CLACK", this time closer to me.

I went upstairs, and saw these two guys in a boat nearby fishing, but I couldn't work out what could have made the noise, then while I was watching, one of them cast his lure INTO THE SIDE OF MY BOAT! As I'm heading out, the other guy did the same thing! These guys were DELIBERATELY casting AT MY BOAT! I couldn't believe it!

After a short conversation where I have to admit I ight have a bit less than polite, I invited them to come aboard and continue the "discussion" - they declined, so I decided I'd go visit them in my tender instead. Turned out they weren't all that keen on that either, so they took off at high speed. (In a 4 knot zone)

Later I told a keen fisherman mate about this, and he wasn't in the least surprised - apparently some fishing show had been advising anglers to do exactly that - cast lures into the sides of people's boats! Supposedly fish hang around under them.

I was amazed - are people really becoming so inconsiderate of other people?

To help complete the picture for those who aren't aware, 44CC is, if I recall correctly, 6'8" and 265 pounds.

There are plenty of inconsiderate people out there. Music being played too loud, opening car doors against another car, leaving shopping carts in the parking lot instead of putting them away properly, throwing rubbish on the ground or in my yard.....reminds me to do something with my neighbors halyards that clang all night!

Re: Are People Becoming More Ignorant ?

I have had EXACTLY the same thing happen on Lake Champlain in VT, on the other side of the planet. This is by no means limited to Sydney. Must be all the rage in fishing technique. Have actually found rubber worms and assorted fishing lures dangling from the rigging!!! We have metal-flaked, overpowered bass boats who zoom back and forth, forth and back, up and down the lake in search of the not-so-elusive smallish fish. Bass contest days bring out swarms of these ahem..."boats". Extreme rudeness is alive and well on all continents.

Do you know which show? We could inundate them with hate mail.

Personally, I think they were right about mankind's de-evolution.

Not wrong. I often marvel at the folks coming in ,in their motor boats ;right by an mooring field at really high speeds. sometimes the GG nabs them and the sheriff's dept. NO consideration,whatsoever..

People are not getting more ignorant... It's just that with more and more people around you get to notice their ignorance more often

Re: Are People Becoming More Ignorant ?

Judging by the empty tins of sweetcorn, old fishing line, lead weights and general rubbish left at the public lakes and ponds nearby, I would say it's an angler thing, no respect for the environment or property, and judging by the anglers I know, just confirms my opinion.

Re: Are People Becoming More Ignorant ?

Unfortunately, the world has always had its share of idiots. Any quick read of history will confirm that. What perpetually amazes me is how people head out on the water with no clue as to what they are doing, in the assumption, I guess, that they can just call up someone on the cell phone to come and get them if they have trouble. I was at a fuel dock in Florida once when I saw someone push off from the dock without having started their engine. They were in a shiny new 19-foot bowrider. I thought it seemed rather odd that they didn't have the motor going, and yep soon I heard the starter motor grinding away. As they slowly drifted away in the marina I shouted out to them and yes they wanted a tow back in. Managed to find a dock line to toss to them and pulled them back into the fuel dock, where it turns out that they had just purchased the boat, had never started it before because the boat dealer had started it for them before sending them on their way, and they had the fuel tank selector turned towards an empty tank so there was no way that engine was going to start. Incredible! Not sure who was dumber, the buyer or the salesman.
