Thanks all for your replies. This is a very interesting thread to me and I hope the OP, maxingout, gets the answers he is looking for. Running off the dc bus (12 to 13.x vdc) is what I would want, purely for a dedicated Nav system.

13.6 is smack in the middle of OK for anything labelled 12V.

DCDC conversion is trivial, long as you have a handle on wattage.
