yep, i'd agree, any of the subaru 4wd and automatic.

Are those available in the US? I can't find them on the American VW page, I'm not seeing any listed used, and I'm having a hard time finding any information about them. The info I'm finding from Europe makes me want one, but if I can't get one here it's not very useful...

Huh! OK, I may have to call my local VW dealer and ask. What years have they available, and how close is the US spec sheet to the European one?

I've got to admit, if what I'm seeing (~40mpg highway, probably reasonable tow capacity, essentially a taller-than-average station wagon) is accurate, I'd happily buy one. That's better than the Matrix by a long shot. I just can't figure out what the US spec sheet looks like or where to find one.
