Re: Best Whiskey

What is the best whiskey for having aboard your sailing yacht along with the proper mixers for cockpit sundowners?

The part in bold has a different answer than the unbolded modification.

For the bolded part, you could hardly go wrong with a single malt scotch, or possibly Jameson.

The second part can be just about anything, as the word "best" has no meaning in that context. Jim Beam, maybe? Whatever is on sale will probably work.

Re: Best Whiskey

If you dont think good whiskey makes a difference in a mixed drink.

Go get a $10 1/2 gal bottle of “whiskey charcoal filtered” and a bottle of just Jack Daniels and made up a couple.

In this case 0ne is for the brown paper baggers anchored under the bridge and other is for normal boat scum.

Me too.

But any grog that's branded free is fine with me. I've no morals.
Oh and bourbon is definitely neither whiskey nor whisky.

I am very partial to a nice Glenfiddich whisky and I only mix it with a glass.

Feel free to specify whether your choice is for blazer wearing events, average boat scum get togethers, boat scum scum gatherings, and the brown paper bag drinkers anchored under the bridge.
So the liquor cubby on our boat is kept stocked with Bombay Sapphire (Gin and Tonic is our preferred après-sail beverage in the summer), Sailor Jerry’s Rum (For Canadian Toddies when winter sailing), and usually a burbon of some sort if we’re in the mood for an old fashioned.

For reference, a “Canadian Toddie” is hot water, Rum, a lemon slice, and maple syrup.

Re: Best Whiskey

I was visiting a friend recently and he brought out a bottle of Blanton's, which another friend had given him. I don't like whiskey, but I have to say this stuff was not bad. The packaging stated that they don't advertise the age of their whiskey, because they trust their distillers to bottle it when it is ready - regardless of age (or something to that effect).

Unfortunately I have no idea where it is available or how much it costs.

In the islands, the natives add rum to the baby formula's...

Whiskey ?? Can't say I've met too many sailors that drink whiskey. It's an acquired taste for sure. I guess the gentrified folk imbibe it.

Interesting thread though. I've learned a bit.

Re: Best Whiskey

Elijah Craig small batch is very good bourbon & reasonably priced.

Rittenhouse Rye is the best for cocktails I find - peppery & cuts through. It does make a difference, depending on the drink. Manhattans or old fashioneds reward good booze. Yeah for mixing with Coke maybe just get the cheap stuff. Ezra Brooks is decent bottom shelf bourbon. I also like Canadian Club.

Bourbon is great 'cause you can find good stuff that's not crazy expensive like single malt has become.

Re: Best Whiskey

If you’re looking for “Whiskey” then you’re talking either Irish or American (Scotch is “Whisky”).

Irish - you can’t really go wrong with Jamieson’s or Bushmills.
American - I’ll leave that to other’s better qualified than me.

As an alternative, what about “The Kraken” (rum).
If you don’t like the taste, you can always look at the pretty picture!

Re: Best Whiskey

I am addicted to Crown Royal and Schweppes Ginger Ale. Get the small 8 oz cans of Ginger Ale and refrigerate. Fill a large double insulated tumbler of at least 20 oz capacity with ice and add about 4-6 oz of Crown. SLOWLY add the refrigerated ginger ale and stir only once.

Don, I keep meaning to get in touch, life keeps getting in the way. You want me to bring some of this to try ?

Re: Best Whiskey

There are over 16 variations of whiskey, mostly differentiated by their country of origin [and a few rules]. Here are the 5 primary types of whiskeys/whiskies[1]:
Tennessee Whiskey [Jack Daniels & George Dickel]
Irish Whiskey [pot still Irish whiskey, Irish malt whiskey, Irish grain whiskey, and blended Irish whiskey]
Canadian Whisky [Crown Royal rye whiskey]
Bourbon [corn mash, distilled at 160 proof or less, aged in a new charred oak]
Scotch Whisky [Single Malt, Single Grain, Blended (Scotch, Grain, or Malt)]

1. The main difference between whisky and whiskey is, of course, the spelling. This reflects the original Scots and Gaelic derivations, of the word(s) ‘Uisce beatha’, meaning Water of Life, with each variation being carried through to modern use.
Whiskey (Gaelic) – US & Ireland [pl: whiskeys]
Whisky (Scots) – Scotland, Canada, and Japan [pl: whiskies]

IMO & IIRC: The best whisky/whiskey, is the one in hand.

Re: Best Whiskey

Summer: Johnny Walker black label with an ice cube or a bourbon

Winter: any Islay single malt, neat. My favorite is the 18yo Bowmore

Re: Best Whiskey

Half the people who decide to read a whiskey thread want to talk about rum I started a rum thread on here somewhere for that.
