Re: Best Whiskey

Hmm, whiskey has to be Irish or.. Us, but not scotch.

Whisky is Scottish (note no e).

Whiskey: bushmills 10 year triple distilled.

Whisky with a touch of water laguvalin (spelling?)

Thumbs up Re: Best Whiskey

Teachers. Smooth, good flavour, good sipping whiskey that doesn’t need anything added (even water!), and inexpensive

Re: Best Whiskey

While perusing this thread, I thought I might check what's currently onboard Luna Blu. Haven't replenished the liquor locker since last season so let's see what's here. Disclaimer, I am a southerner, and a Virginian specifically, so my bourbon stock reflect supporting local distilleries. Rums, maybe not so much, yet there are a couple of Virginia distilleries that are producing rum now (Bowman's is one). For bourbons, I had Ironclad (the crew and I polished it off following yesterday's race)- will be replaced by Ironclad's latest release, Sword and Sash; John J. Bowman, Four Roses Small Batch, and 1792 Small Batch. For rums, El Dorado, Plantation, Real McCoy, Appleton and Brugal 1888. No scotch onboard- I thought there was a Glenfiddich but I guess it died after the New Year's Day Race. Didn't know the locker had more rums than bourbon! There are so many rums to choose from it's hard to decide what is going to stay onboard and what goes once its polished off. I probably have too many bottles onboard but what seems to happen is that one of the crew brings a bottle for the after race party and they just seem to multiply- either that or we're not drinking nearly enough!

Re: Best Whiskey

I'm more of a Rum drinker (Loaded Coronas) are my go to drink. BUT my girlfriend likes Maker Mark smoked in an Old Fashioned... And I have to admit it is amazingly smooth.. You can buy a smoking kit for $30 to $60 that is a piece of Oak that fits the top of a glass with a hole in the center and a screen. you place the selected wood in the center and light it up. the coldness of the drink draws the smoke into the glass... very smooth!!!

Re: Best Whiskey

Whiskey makes you frisky!

Helium infused beer makes you squeaky!

Oh, so going to purchase some of this beer for our next Friday afternoon happy hour at work, my employees will have great fun.

Left wondering if one can infuse helium into whiskey so as to make one frisky and squeaky. Ditto for bubbly wine or champagne drinks.

Re: Best Whiskey

For "rye" cocktails: Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, Manhattan, Boggy Delight (Cranberry, dash of bitters -- try it!), etc. -- traditional J. P. Wiser's Canadian sucessfully revives the old cocktail tradition.

If you like yours straight, on-the rocks don't fall for all of those new top-shelf whiskeys. Many of them are produced by industrial scale distillers in Kentucky and bottled up with fancy custom labeling. Evan Williams 1783 a very good moderately priced choice for stocking a bar. Cutty Sark will do it for scotch fans.

For those tasty, fruity, perfect sundowners: Rum! Anything is fine. For rum fanatics, a good gold or dark with plain soda and a twist of lime is an old island tradition.

The "Best Whiskey" is from a bottle served with a straw.

Choose your pleasures.

Just saying.

Re: Best Whiskey

We had a bottle or two of whiskey on board, but rum is king. I am a little foggy, but I'm pretty sure we went to a lecture and tasting in Trinidad by this guy. He was not a fan of the fancy dark rums. We told him he had to try the Venezuelan sipping rums before he could complete his life's work.

As they didn't want to make 'scotch' and couldn't afford to dump it, they sold it as a 'limited' offering... it became their second best seller.

Again, when I was introduced 10+ years ago it turned me into a whiskey drinker. Whiskey guru Jim Murray always rates them very high.

There's several variations available now, I prefer the original maderia finish, but the others are also very good, especially the oak.

I have family in Wales and stock up whenever we go there, or they come here. but it is available in the US, with some searching.

Re: Best Whiskey

Spent years as a "Rock-an-Roll" guitarist, Jack Daniels was not only "accepted", but it was also almost a requirement.
Not any different on the boat, never had any reason to change.
