Between North Stradbroke & Moreton Island

Does anyone sail in or out between Moreton and Straddy. Never seen anyone go that way and it's a bit shallow but doable so long as the sand banks don't shift around.

Done it in a power boat in virtually calm conditions . It is very popular with the fishing folks.

Not sure why I would want to do it in a yacht, as it would have to be light conditions, and so once you were out you would be motoring or waiting for breeze.

On the other hand Gold Coast seaway is much safer for the southern exit, and the top of Morton Bay for the northern exit you have any number of options.

Doable but lots of banks and changing all the time. Rough on the incoming tide in front of the bar. I would say its more of a passage to outside.

Sorry Dave misunderstood your post. We dont see many sailors going out that way. The outside of the bar is pretty shallow at the moment so I'm thinking its not worth the risk and no quicker unless your going east.

Hi Dave, that is known as South Passage. Not a spot I choose to go in a sail boat.

I did my yachtmaster ticket in Moreton bay, I wouldn't attempt that channel in a keel boat.
On a side note the worst sailing conditions (scariest) I've experienced was in Moreton bay 40+k wind against tide situation, shallow water, lots of banks, no engine, entering Brisbane river was a joyous moment.

Re: Between North Stradbroke & Moreton Island

Steel trawler guys based at Amity do it most nights but do on occasion bounce.
Big Cat from Raby Bay takes charters regularly, might pay to book a trip and run a handheld for the trip.
Local knowledge is essential.

On a shallow draft cat I would and have done it in the past on a motoring day, sailing day would be different.
Watch the water, it'll tell you where depth is.

I am a few hundred metres from the entrance now looking out and today would not be the day.
Opencpn with Google map satelite view overlay is a usefull tool.

Re: Between North Stradbroke & Moreton Island

I did it once in a 27 footer with 4 ft draft on the top of the tide in deadcalm conditions.
THERE IS NO Defined Channel on the north east. !!!!
If there is any swell you're are a gonner!
Even if you make it out you won't find your way back in.
Don't be fooled by the deep channel on the inside.
THere will be NO ONE to rescue you. (Except helicopter, if you get them on time).

You make it sound more dramatic than reality.

I watched 2 trawlers cross last night with a reasonable swell and breaking waves, they were not gonners.
I regularly see the Cleveland volunteer marine rescue boat and police boats up here so obviously helicopter is not the only option.

Re: Between North Stradbroke & Moreton Island

Open cpn google map overlay.
Trawlers appear to use the lower east west channel.
No guarantee or endorsement from me and I repeat, local knowledge and skills are essential
