Re: Boarded with bad intentions?

Got my 8' portabote dinghy with a 4HP engine stolen

They tried to steal the nice 10' dinghy with a 15HP engine from the big cat next to me, but they had motion lights and had chained the dinghy to the boat and so woke up and interrupted the thieves, one whom fell in the water and the other paddled off in a skiff with one oar....

.... right to my boat next door, where they cut the painter on my dinghy and made off with it. Still annoyed that my neighbours didn't shine a flashlight on my boat or sound a horn or something to wake me up.

They ended up ditching the PB on a beach where a fisherman found it, but I never got the engine back, though god knows what they'd do with a 4HP that didn't run very well

Re: Boarded with bad intentions?

If anyone has any interest, I've created a new thread poll - this info might be more informative, as it allows a YES/NO to the general question.

Please disregard the repeated misspelling of dinghy... gets me every time..

Keep in mind the well known sailor Sir Peter Blake was murdered by an intruder on a well crewed yacht in Brazil.

Wasp spray - in the face, the foaming kind kind that shoots 20 - 25', better than mace and legal everywhere I think. And no holes in the boat!

You have link to prove wasp spray is effective against people

The problem is always what to do with the body afterwards. And just think of cleaning all the blood. Yukie.

I am 100% against guns and boats (together) but being meek for people who come to your home to take your stuff or life does not solve the matter either.

There should be some universal law to take out bad apples and bad navigators out of the system.

One thing nobody mentioned that isn't regulated is ytterbium fiber lasers. I have a small one, only 10kW peak power pulses, but they make them much bigger (IPG Photonics). About the size of a small cereal box and can run on 24 volts at a few amps.

They can cut through steel when focused (I was cutting little microscopic gears out of razor blades on my cnc mill).

Just like when cleaning fish... the secret is to wet the deck down FIRST.

Re: Boarded with bad intentions?

IMHO, you guys go to some dodgy places.... :-) Go somewhere nice, jeeeeze

In my other opinion, you need to know if it is a minor problem or has the **** really hit the fan.

Its hard to get people agreeing on a suitable solution because the intentions of the people coming on board vary from trying to retrieve their fishing net to wanting to pillage, rape and murder.

I think you could set up a system that would indicate their intentions and therefore you will know which response to use. It doesn't matter if your last plan is to exit through a hatch and jump overboard or come out all guns blazing, you need to know what their intention is.

If you set up 2 traps and then a locked door between you and them you will have a pretty good idea if you are in danger or not.

1st switch or detector at the boats entry point with lights and sound. If that goes off they will more than likely bolt. If the 2nd string line switch goes off at the entry door they don't care if you are there or not they are coming in and will deal with you either if you get in the way or they are coming for you. It is a pretty safe bet they believe they have the ability to win any physical confrontation either through weapons or they have already sized you up, so they are probably right.

At this point you should have your plan going. If it is flight, you should be swimming by now. If it is fight then you are waiting behind a locked door with the advantage. If they ignore your warnings and try to break down the door fire a warning shot, or spray them through a hole in the door, or gas the room they are in with something nasty, stab their fingers, foot, shoulder as it is up against the door. After that, if they keep coming, any action you take is necessary.

Might be surprisingly effective, depending on who's coming aboard.

He also came out shooting, which causes an immediate escalation
