Re: BOAT FOR SALE noticed trends

I had heart shaped sailboats in my eye when I bought mine. Pretty sure the broker was rock hard.

Poseidon have mercy on my soul.

How many people survey after sale?

So they just buy it and get the survey later for insurance or something?

Re: BOAT FOR SALE noticed trends

Thinking about SV-Viento's question (Page 3) about "older boats." We go back over 25 years when considering a new for us boat.

We are really only considering older style designs typical of those built before the 1990s. Starting about then, designs became more flat-bottomed and wider. Now-a-days the shapes are too extreme for me.

Older designs have fallen from grace and their prices are reflecting the absence of buyers.

Recently, I delivered a 2011 model of a typical charter boat. Boy, does it pound! Even in mild conditions. The pounding is hard on the crew and the boat. The wide interior, lack of hand holds and sharp edges mean falling inside the yacht is more of a risk than anything else.

Granted, the contemporary design is intended for a four hour sail followed by some leisurely post-sail recreation as opposed to weeks offshore. For that, they are perfect. Just not our cruising plan.

In order to get a sea-kindly boat one must forego interior space for a more veed shape and narrower hull form. See below for our current boat, bow on.
I would like a boat a bit longer with headroom and roughly this shape.

Until the 1990s, most ocean sailing yachts had a shape not found in today's modern designs. So, I prefer the "older designs."

On a related topic... we have figured out that if we keep our Aphrodite 101, Averisera, and combine a cruise with shore-side accommodation we can go for almost 20 more years before we've spent the amount for a newer yacht. At age 69, that doesn't seem too unreasonable. I love my boat.
