A past girlfriend, recovering addict and the woman who had the greatest influence in my life, a true inspiration who encouraged me to buy the boat but was lost to cancer way too soon."Susan C" Dave

Got "Rum Doxy" (pirate speak for "fine woman") from a pirate dictionary. Don't tell my wife though, I told her it's named after her.

"Coyote Angel", the Catalina 30's name, comes from the novel "The Milagro Beanfield War". The Coyote Angels were raggedy-assed angels that nevertheless looked out for the good folks of Milagro.

She is a slightly modified Tom Colvin "Doxy", so she is a 'sort of' Doxy, or 'not quite a Doxy', hence her name, "PARADOXY'. My life, at the time of naming her, was also a bit of a paradox, adding extra meaning to the name. Also, an old English term for whore, is doxy. She (my boat) is my mistress, she IS sort of a whore, and, at times, I have called her worse!
My favourite name? In Vancouver they often have to wait for a quick break in the fog, and then duck out of the harbour ............. spotted a boat there named "FOG DUCKER"

We purchased a 2nd hand yacht and paid a delivery skipper to deliver it, telling him that it was insured for no less than a crew of 2 for open water passages. He managed to sink it after trying to sail it single handed over 450 miles with no auto pilot.

When the rescue crowd rang us and informed us of his rescue and loss of our boat, we were devastated, loss of boat and no insurance. Lawyers told us that suing him was not worth it as he probably had no money and legal costs thru the roof.

I told my wife I wasn't going to give up on owning anothe yacht so easy, so we found another bigger and better boat, asked the owners the name of it and they replied "Get-a-Life" I said to the wife no way am I gonna keep that name, but when we got over the shock of losing the other boat and got this one home (we sailed it back ourselves) we thought the name very appropriate, we had just recovered from a traumatic experience and needed to "Get-a-Life"

My wife's name is Ruth and we thought 'Rutea' was Ruth in Spanish. It's not - Ruth in Spanish is Ruth. The boat's original name was 'Dutchess of Barbob' with 'Dutchess' deliberately misspelled (because of her Dutch heritage) and 'Bar' and 'Bob' from the owners, Barbara and Bob. We pronounce 'Rutea' as a three syllable word with the 'e' having a long 'a' sound.

I must confess, though, as sometimes when people ask me the origin of the name, I lie. I've been know to say, "It's a mythical Polynesian goddess of the wind . . ." or some such fabrication. I just hope it doesn't mean something offensive in some foreign language!

Fair winds and calm seas.

Angles Wings won her name because of the way she comported herself on an early overnight, despite some decidedly bungling, amateurish and imprudent skippering…

The C-22 had no name when we got it, I figured I would sail it first to get inspired and on the lake its name has 2 meanings "Don't Wake me" yes a dream come true after 30 yrs and a message to power boats.

The C-26's name comes from our first cruise after buying it. Tring to think of a name for 2 days untill we got cought in a gale storm of 10' waves and 65 gust. After requireing the assistance of the CG I didn't think the 1st mate would step foot on it again but was suprised when she was ready to go the next morning, so Shaken Knot Stir'd seemed
appropriate.

Tabbycat is named after our beloved kitty, who unfortunately decided the sailing life wasn't for him after all. It also turns out to be hard to enunciate on the radio, everyone thinks we are called "HappyCat". The dinghy is named "Flea".

Thinking of naming a catamaran "Schrodingers" but no one I talk to gets the reference (Schrodinger's Cat). I admit it, I'm a nerd.
