Canada to the Azores

Greetings folks. I apologize if I'm in the wrong section or if this has been covered (likely has been but I can't find it ).. when is the best time to sail from Nova Scotia Canada to the Azores? Opportunity arises for a sail across later this year (Sept/Oct) in your considered opinion is this a viable time for the voyage?

Addendum.. is the an141 route the best option (or at least part thereof)?

Fair winds to all.

Leaving then might set you up for some nasty weather as the season changes from summer to fall. Others may have more insight.

Re: Canada to the Azores

Ideal timing is early to mid-summer before hurricane season starts.

Sept/Oct are certainly possible. However, you get the chance of the large systems (ex-hurricanes) spinning up from the tropics, and from mid/late sept into Oct you start to get the chance for early winter lows. You would want to pay more attention to the total Atlantic weather picture, and a faster boat would be better than a slower one.

In that time frame, I would want to do real-time routing based on the weather than fixate on a pre-set route.

Re: Canada to the Azores

Sept No,
Oct, for the love of god, No.

June July even August, Mhee

My insurance was quite extensive,My cover probably not. technically named storm are no longer named by the time they get to Canadian or Portuguese waters. But I suspect not. And if I asked, if they are competent they will probably say no.

I’m sure it’s possible to get insurance. After All lots of People in Florida own boats. Somebody must be insuring them.

We only carry minimal 3rd party liability (for port and marina clearance). Insurance isn't an issue I face

I do agree real time routing will figure high in our priorities. No option on a faster boat.. It is what it is.. a steel schooner

Personally I would avoid the direct route.. I would run S to minimise the distance to Bermuda an make the hop in a good window then do the same for the Azores run.
Met a guy in Horta who had done the direct route at this time of year on his steel 37ftr, he got hammered and lost welded on deck boxes and his mast above the spreaders.
He was still repairing things when I arrived in June the following year.
Oh, and it took him 50 days.

The run South from Canada would be brutal. We are a steel schooner, not the very best for beating into the wind and prevailing currents. So looking for our next best option

Well I have never been there but looking at my Sept Pilot Charts you have a favourable current to carry you down to Martha's Vineyard and beyond.. winds predominantly Westerlies and if you stay close to the coast currents and wind will be mainly in your favour.
Alternatively go straight across from somewhere just N off Hatterass and ride the currents and winds to the Azores.
How much do you trust yourself and the boat.
Sept and Oct below.
