Apparently Martin Short was originally cast as Captain Ron, and Curt Russell was going to be the dad. They got to drinking one night before filming and tried swapping roles.... the rest: history!!!

And one more fun fact for those of us enamored enough with this movie to have read down this far: the real Ron Rico (the actual charter captain who exclusively drank a cheap rum branded Rico to the extent it became his name) did actually have a missing eye and eyepatch, but he also had a PEG LEG which the producers found to be too ridiculous even for a movie trying to be ridiculous!!

Apparently these salty character captains were run out of God Loving states in the late 1960’s and ended up in the Keys (a few remain there), but as Florida got its regulatory act together they then took the final leap to the caribbean. And so was born Ron Rico.

This thread has found the ONLY commonality among us all. I absolutely love it.

I was watching the movie back in my Hawaii days with my buddy and his wife (born in Mexico), and she never said much of anything, but mid movie, she pipes up out of the blue... "Why's the boat called Meatball?!"

I think that's when I went from liking the movie to LOVING it. Every detail has been thought of! They don't make them like that anymore.
