The posters have all made excellent suggestions but a few need some clarity.

First Jamaica. Don't kid yourself, it can be a wonderful stop for you, or it can be the pits. It depends where you go, just like with anywhere else in the world. Port Antonio, Porti, is great just like it's been touted on this thread (great facilities). Kingston, not a good choice to wander into the wrong area of the capital city at night. Montego Bay is not a hurricane hole, but Bogue Lagoon, just south of there (a mile or so) is excellent with good water protected by a reef and lots of mangroves to duck into and tie off.

Lots of folks head up the Rio Dulce and don't come back out, it depends on you, but it's a pretty secure place to spend hurricane season and lots of fun.
