Re: Cebu to Panama. How do I get there?

Hey, kaivai, FYI, tropic bird is "tevake", so the boat is mis-named. Heavy as all get out, bilge keels, you sure you want it?

Another consideration.
What is the Southerly's import status in the Philipines?
What money is owing to the marina?

Yes, and there's the clear title question to answer.

Need SURVEY in CEBU before cutting a deal to buy

So...

Heading to CEBU ( Carmen) (Zaks Marina) next month Jan 25TH / 2023, to check out this boat.

ANY IDEAS where I can get a REPUTABLE survey in that area, or fly someone in from Manilla or Aussie, or anywhere??

How many $ will you have invested in this boat before you even decide if it's worth more than $1.
I'd look at what is available in - say - Thailand and make a side trip to Phuket if you say phuket to the $1 boat.

My elder son told me some years ago that old people - ie you and I - are unwilling to accept that a lot of 'stuff' has negative value.

CF has a member from the Philippines, called "Pelagic". You might PM him asking this very question.

Nothing wrong with Laurent Giles bilge keelers... delivered a 62ft design from St Martin to E Spain.. mind she did have double h'sails and hydraulic furling but she did 5kts in 10kts of wind 60* off the bow.

Re: Cebu to Panama. How do I get there?

Every "thing" has negative value as we wont be taking any of it when us when we 'old people' sooner-rather-than-later depart this earthly life.

That said, The Southerly 14 is not a $1 boat, even in its worst condition. I have to consider its actually worth the asking price or whats the point of even thinking twice, of this or any sailer for sell. Pay $50k, spend $100k, and its worth $250 where I come from. In 5 years I will get ALL my money back in NZ, or Aussie, or USA and it will still be ready to cruse for the next guy.

This Laurent Giles design is known for being a great sailor up upwind travel, thank you Boatman61. No doubt it is a fine craft.

I will make an effort to hunt down "Pelagic" and hopefully he can help. Thank you Ann

Re: Cebu to Panama. How do I get there?

As a follow-up,...

Firstly, ONLY I work on this boat. Help from the locals is very good but generally I don't need or want it.

Bought the Southerly in Cebu in January 2023, clear title, USCG registered already, was all paid up at the marina with a small credit

Working my way through several issues, no huge red flags, sails are great, engine great, rebuilt several obsolete parts so have years of service ahead there. Electrical is good but all the devices such as lighting, radios, electronics, navigation will need to be done as there is nothing. Plan to do new solar and Lithium, and add new refrigeration.

Plan haul out Jan 25 to do a full thru hull and plumbing refit. Will go to NZ this December, likely from Cebu, to get the TruDesign fittings. Steel substructure under the windlass needs to be cut out and rebuild, suppose will rebuild this in stainless,

It will still be 2-3 more years at this speed before she gets underway.

I'm in no hurry. It make an awesome live-aboard with shore power and I'm getting adjusted to life in PI as it goes.

Lovin It!!

Re: Cebu to Panama. How do I get there?

Thanks,

It is TAVAKE by the way. The not too heavy aluminum boat is not misnamed.

Tavake - in Tongan, is the bird. Tavake yacht owner and I have family in and have lived Tonga and also know this bird, and its also used as a family sir name there.

Not that it matters much, but every time I open the thread I see and re-read your comments regarding this.
