Cell Phone / Mobile in the Caribbean ?

Sorry if the question has been asked before. No time to search.

What do you, US cruisers, do in the Caribbean in terms of cell phone/mobile? Do you get a sim card on a US phone with a US plan? do you buy a mobile in the Caribbean? Any suggestions for plans (Verizon, ATT, etc...??)

US Cell Plans outside CONUS tend to get expensive and have a lot of fine print, like having to spend at least 6 months of the year in CONUS

The easiest way, and we do, is travel with unlocked cell phones and buy local sim cards when we arrive in the new country.

As a back up we do have a Iridium Sat Phone.
