Certificate of Documentation VS Pink Slip

When I bought my boat, I only applied for and was given a new certificate of documentation from the coast guard. I never got title from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Now that I'm thinking of selling the boat, I'm worried that I don't have a pink slip (title) for it. My question: does a COD stand in for a pink slip in the boating world?
