Cheoy Lee Perry 35 Stern Tube Housing

I purchased a few issues. One of them necessitates the removal of the prop shaft. Here is the outer housing issue. The past owner epoxied the housing to the hull. Im at a loss for next steps.

Any help, greatly appreciated. Attachment 192280Click image for larger version

That’s different than mine. Why do you need to take it off?

Heat the bushing to about 400 degrees F and it will break the epoxy bond.

The epoxy is a shim to correct for alignment, it ought to pop off if you put a screwdriver under it and pry.
Hopefully he used a release agent, but even if he didn’t epoxy doesn’t bond well to metal as it can’t form either a chemical or physical bond, even if the metal is rough there isn’t much for the epoxy to hold onto.

If you can’t get it to pop off, try the heat thing, after you remove the Cutless bearing, burning rubber stinks.

Did you ever get your CL fixed?
Did you ever find an inner Cutless bearing ?

I just bought a CL 1979 38 foot sloop and am replacing my prop shaft and changing it to standard instead of metric

Required a new CB housing on the exterior of the boat where you are fixing this.
I had to have it made out of 316 stainless

I'm in the throes of it now JLSHAW. Haven't found a CB yet, no, but haven't started looking either. Been consumed with whatever the hell is going on with how to get the new shaft in.

Im having some trouble with my bilge area leaking down to the keel so I am considering putting a drippless system on the inner bearing.

Do you have a blister problem?

Ive got mine on the hard and will be for several months trying to get these cleaned up and repaired

Love the boat, just needs a lot of TLC

I put a PSS packing in a few years ago and love it. My old stuffing box was rigid and it was impossible to keep from leaking as my Engine would move on it’s flexible mounts.

Looked up PSS packing Shoalcove. I'll look at that when I repower. For now I am focused on getting the boat floating and sailing for this season.

Any advice, pics, vids on lifting your engine to install prop shaft? That's my next move.

Re: Cheoy Lee Perry 35 Stern Tube Housing

I just put a 6x6 beam across the companionway and lift with a chainfall or such. Obviously, you will have to lift it off the mounts so the top nuts have to come off and whatever hoses impede progress. I found that I could get away with only lifting a few inches and then pushing it to one side as I slid the prop shaft into place. What engine do you have? I had a Pathfinder (VW) but repowered to Yanmar 3YM30 a few years ago. The Pathfinder is a lot heavier and tougher to move around...

I have a Volvo Penta MD11C. It weighs 550 lbs. My issue is that the companionway is forward the engine compartment by a few inches. I'll have to turn a corner some to gain purchase with the block and tackle.

I was in touch with Bob Perry pre-purchase. For $500 he'll give advice for as long as you own your boat. Money well spent if I had it.

I'll likely repower next winter so this is to get me through this season.

Re: Cheoy Lee Perry 35 Stern Tube Housing

Today I'm concentrated on getting the CB's out. Shoalcove, have you ever removed the stuffing box housing? Seems to be threaded on to something that I can't get at. And I can't spin the housing because of the two flared ends.

My plan is to get that out and to then push the two CB's out from their respective other sides.

By the way, thought you might get a kick out of the these. ...

So yes Shoalcove, you changed your stuffing box so would have had to take then old one off. Was it threaded on to something in the hull and then screwed in?

Re: Cheoy Lee Perry 35 Stern Tube Housing

This is the stuffing box housing. I need to get it off in order to pound the stuffing box side CB out of the stern tube.

It feels like it's threaded but can't be turned fully as it hits the hull. Was this the same as the one you got rid of shoalove?Click image for larger version
