Controlling draft on flat cut sail.

Can the draft on a flat cut sail be controlled by increasing/decreasing vertical tension on the luff and leech?

Re: Controlling draft on flat cut sail.

Probably. How bendy is the mast and how much draft is there?

It would be an free standing 3" aluminum mast(little to no flex), 24' tall, sail would be a gaffer, 19'x4.8' with 30" gaff(little under 70ft2). The foot would be permanently attached to a boom. The aim would be to use one piece of cloth for the whole sail with reef points sown in, so no inherent draft.

From my understanding lug rigs generally use flat cut sails, relying on the stretch of the fabric to create the draft. In my minds eye, on my planned setup having the luff and leech a little eased would allow the sail to billow, while tensioning would tend to flatten the whole thing. I'd use a lower modulus sailcloth.

Sounds like it should work. Have fun.
