I single hand a fair amount. I’m a very capable sailor. But offshore in the cockpit I usually do wear a life jacket. As soon as I go forward I have a combo inflatable Life Vest with built in harness. I have a knife attached with a req link to Satelite Communication. I have never used either one but I want to live to play tomorrow! It’s like buying insurance. You buy it hoping to never have to use it!

Not disparaging such approach , but a reliance on “ gear “ can be fatal. For example around me in home waters a satellite plb , is simply a dead body location device.

The vast majority of Jack lines etc are rigged too outboard to prevent an excursion over the guard rails
