Maryland is not in the "north east" by any stretch of the imagination. Again, it's "Mid Atlantic".
My original point was sailors will argue/discuss anything having to do with sailing/boats when the temp is near freezing and they can't sail.

As far as you living in Maryland, that answers the question that you believe you weren't in the North, but to Virginians in the area I was from you are Yankees! (Northerners)

Now add that to the fact it's in the Eastern part of the US.

Maybe this will help.

Question. Where is an Eastern Yankee from?

Answer: He is from the Northeast!

Imagine losing a race because you couldn't set an anchor! ;-)

I have difficulty labelling a "cruiser" a non-sailor.

I think a "sailor" is anyone who has sailing (in any form) in their blood.

A novice sailor, is one who is just starting to learn and absorbs all input like a sponge.

An old salt, is one adept at making their boat go where they want, when they want, for quite some time, and still considers themselves "learning".

A curmudgeon is one who knows a little about sailing, but was done learning long ago.
My point was racing is more about boat handling, boat setup, course management etc than it is about cruising techniques such as anchoring.

For those of us that raced sailboats for many years, raced as in Skippered our own boats, switching over to cruising is a great way to learn that much more about being a sailor.

Knowing both cruising and racing makes you a better sailor in my opinion.

Also, having sailed and raced in an area where many cruisers were located was quite interesting to say the least, and you can pick up things from them while talking/hanging out

I hung out at the dock with the mostly Full Keel crowd as well although there was a fin keeler here and there. (a real cast of characters at the time) The dock was at our Apartment Complex. At the time, if you lived at the apartments, you could get a slip for $50.00.

They got to know us because we had to tack two times just to get through the dock area. They had never seen anyone sail off the beach (and back in) between the docks before in all types of strong winds.

We also had hurricane parties there (for Cats 1 and 2).

We would watch to see which anchored boats would drag and get dismasted by the low bridge just downwind. All that stopped after Cat 3/4 Ivan hit in 2004 though. There wasn't a party that night. Not by us sailors anyway. The apartment received about 8' of water from it's foundation up.

I also used to run a 4-5 mile trail right beside the ICW in Pensacola near the Pass so I got to see cruisers motoring along even when I wasn't sailing.

Re: Cruisers Vs Sailors

With no desire to take sides in a circular argument, I would like to make a simple statement: when I became involved in sailing, I did so because the act of sailing a boat from point A to B was one of the most enjoyable experiences in my life. My goal, henceforth, has never been the destination but rather the journey. It is why I continue to sail. Good luck and safe sailing.

It's a locals thing so don't feel embarrassed that you just don't get it. There is nothing wrong with you so don't let it keep you up at night.

You may come to understand one day. If you are into history etc of which I majored in

And yes, I've been on sites like Yachtworld etc and understand how they divide up the states

I was considering all this tonight while being knocked around on my boat at the dock with my Mr Heater Buddy on the low setting making things quite comfortable.

The North Wind (possibly Mid Atlantic Wind out of the north to some) was strong but the view of the clear sky out the companionway hatch was nice. Temp was 30 degrees

Perhaps geography would have been a better choice.

Hell, from our point of view down under, you're ALL from the north!

It's a matter of perspective... not history or geography!

That’s funny, b/c I was just about to write that, from my perspective you’re all southerners.
