Cruising/racing Canada's east coast.

Hello all.

There doesn't seem to be a "destinations" forum, so I'm posting here.

For those of you looking for an excuse to come to the east coast of Canada for a visit; The PEI boating festival is happening again this year. Last week-end of July, as usual. Details can be found at: Https://www.peiboatingfestival.com/

The festival, and short races happen every year, but the "around the Island" race; 350 miles of sailing, around Canada's smallest province only happens on even numbered years.

A challenging race at the best of times. From the Tempermental Northumberland Straight on the south side, to the boistrous Bay St Lawrence on the North side, with interesting currents to deal with on the East and West sides. It's a lovely island to cruise, but can be a challenge if your on a tight schedule, or racing.

The end of July is a transition period in these parts, where winds could be very light, or quite sporty, so bring all your sails and plan on giving your tactical skills a good test.

You can race PHRF, or in the non-PHRF cruising class. PHRF has the usual ratings, but cruising class is "first over the line". Multihulls will all race "non-phrf" until we have enough participation to decide on a rating system.

There are also two much shorter races at roughly 50 miles each. One from Charlottetown to Summerside, and another from Summerside to Charlottetown, with entertainment at each event.

While you're in PEI, here are a few ideas of how to spend your land time: https://www.mustdocanada.com/things-...edward-island/

Thanks for reading.

If anyone wants more information, not shown on the websites, please feel free to PM me. I'm happy to talk about sailing strategies for getting up the east coast of the USA to PEI, and enjoying Nova Scotia along the way. We make this trip every year, and it can be a lovely sail up, and back down again.

Cheers all.
Paul.

Thanks Gord.

I can navigate a boat, but my ability to navigate this site is somewhat hampered.

To the mods: feel free to move this thread to wherever you find it's most appropriate.

Cheers.

Thanks for posting that. I sail to PEI every summer, usually Cardigan . Would love to do a race or two. Is it correct to assume it will all be centred around charlottown, other than the summerside stop?

Re: Cruising/racing Canada's east coast.

Hi Doug, nice to hear from you.

The around the island race starts and ends in Charlottetown, and the awards are also presented there. Charlottetown does have more going on, since there are two race starts, and two race finishes. Whereas Summerside only has one race start and one race finish.

We'd be glad to see another multihull on the start line. Come on down! There aren't many of us multihulls in the Maritimes, we'd be excited to meet you.

Cheers.
Paul.

I spoke to my wife, she's in, so looks like it will be a go. Home port is in the bra's dor lakes in cape breton so it's an easy run to charlottetown. Is PEI home for you, and if so, where do you keep your boat?

Re: Cruising/racing Canada's east coast.

Hi Doug.

Hurray, I'm happy to hear you'll be coming for the boating festival, and maybe participating in a race. I look forward to seeing you there.

We spend our summers in Summerside, and our winters in the Bahamas. We're usually in Summerside from June to September. We're hoping to stop by the Bras D'or on our way to PEI this year, perhaps we'll see you there.

Check your PM for a message, and my personal e-mail.

Cheers.
Paul.
