It's pretty impressive that they got Australia right.

That's kinda weird looking! No wrecked boats, no piles of pontoons. Woner where everything went.

Haven't been there for years, but it was once a fairly nice marina. I think I recall them having bad shoaling issues, so perhaps it was abandoned prior to the storm.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

IIRC, Laguna Keys was only rated for a Cat 3 cyclone. It had been in receivership for a while, and the shoaling was a problem for our depth, went there once, only. It was the kind of place where one needs to have a car.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Laguna Quays is now owned by a Chinese mob called Fullshare and is supposably still in redevelopment. I know a couple of electrical contractors that did some work there about 12 months ago and where supposed to have a 15 month contract, that contract, along with others, was suspended until further notice.

The last I heard the channel in to Laguna Quays Marina was silted up and needed dredging, but that was a couple of years ago now.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Three years ago they where digging out the access road to the resort office.
The marina back then looked only slightly better than the current picture.
Looked like a third world ruin complete with tress growing out of the 3rd floor roof.
This place in it's day had marble floors and Royal Doulton china in the guests rooms.

I stayed there in 1995 it was a full 5 star Resort, Golf club and Marina. I seem to remember the Australian Multi Hull championship being held there one year back then as well, in the Days when XL2 in it's first incarnation was one of the gun boats.

Built by a Japanese based company Aqua Del Ray: of Kobe Japan.
The Japanese embarked on a transformation from native untouched coastal wilderness in the mid north coast of Queensland into a platform in which to view this native sanctuary firsthand. A woody scrubland was magically transformed with the very essence of the wilderness protected and nurtured. An abundance of native wallabies, kangaroos, koalas and a multitude of Australian water birds. Along with migratory birds that took refuge within this paradise.
The idilic surroundings were the backdrop for the five star service.
Although prior to construction numerous feasibility studies were carried out on the effects to local wildlife and possible impact on the local communities and economies by building such a development.
The Japanese pushed on with their Australian paradise at Laguna Quays to its completion in the 1990's.
The devastating affects of the Kobe earthquake saw the demise of Aqua Del Ray. Laguna was then picked up by Village Roadshow for $23 million.
Mr. David Marriner then purchased jointly with Cbus, A relationship that soured with goodbyes voiced in court. It left Marriner in complete control where he could wow his total lack of due care. The property was snapped up for a reported $13 Million. in 1997 and its been all down hill from there.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Never been there. No reason to stop on the way north, and I hate giving up the easting on the way south. Never been to Mackay (in our boat) for the same reason.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Interesting summary, PaulinOz. Thank you for that. It could have been a success like the one in Sandy Straits, Kingfisher Resort.

One could imagine one's in-mast/boom mainsail would be safe due to the hardshell around it vs. a headsail, but clearly some came undone.
Nothing yet, will enquire

This photo is about 12 months old or so. Debbie caused about a million bucks worth of improvements, I reckon.
