Another winter, I spent the day planing and surfing beautiful waves on the lake on a Laser, never touching the sheet. When it came time to change course I couldn't adjust the sail. I snaked a foot out from underneath the hiking strap and kicked the ice off of the mainsheet.

A fair amount of winter keelboat sailing on Puget Sound as well in those days.

That reminds me of the old Wide World Of Sports intro with the ski jumper in Norway. “The thrill of victory, the agony of cold feet!”

Re: Do you sail all year round?

Yes. Very few days in southern NC are bad enough to keep me off the water.
At the moment, though, I'm boatless, because I'm re-powering, adding radar, and installing new windlass and anchor platform, so the boat's on the hard.

Re: Do you sail all year round?

I was out on San Francisco Bay yesterday, it was beautiful but not much wind.
My longest time not being out on the water is 2 weeks. I intend to work the bottom paint off the boat.

I wonder if there are People living in their boats who are sailing on a route from N to S and S to N to be in the warm weather clime as the season change all year round.

I know some people who do that here on the East Coast of the U.S. It's certainly a plan I've considered; just a matter of finding one (1) crew to get me around North Carolina until I feel up to doing that solo. (And of course finding my next boat.)

Unfortunately not a reality here. Boat on the hard. Currently it is -11 C, feels like -17 with wind chill. Spend the winter dreaming of what further things to get for the boat. And also of course dreaming of bigger boats.

It’s called “rush hour” on the ICW every October and May.

It’s interesting to see the perspective of those who live in cold climates as though everyone must also do so.

West Coast California, good sailing all year round. North to South during summer and South to north during winter for coastal cruising. Some of the most enjoyable sailing in the Bay is October, late February to early June. Last summer was too windy and cold in the bay for much fun.

Re: Do you sail all year round?

You can sail/race about 10 months out of the year on the Gulf Coast, but up here with a high today of 28 degrees F, it's a bit tough.

The docks were like a skating rink with a thin layer of ice on them as were the boats when I was down there today taking some measurements.

Tonight's low is to be 26 degrees and tomorrow night 20 degrees. Ran my engine on Wednesday though so that was good.

The good news is it helps you not to get burnt out on sailing which if you can do it all the time gets a bit old and boring.....

Re: Do you sail all year round?

Why wouldn't I? Averages about 80 degrees here in winter. The ocean is 77 right now so swimming in winter, also.

Re: Do you sail all year round?

We would be sailing then a SW busted up the ice. A cold front came through bu then we got a record snowfall. So until we get a good thaw and a subzero freeze, no sailing.

Re: Do you sail all year round?

The cold and windy on San Francisco Bay is directly proportional to the hot and dryness of the Central Valley. The hotter it is in Sacramento then windier it is in SF Bay…It doesn’t blow in San Francisco Bay…Sacramento Sucks, as we say around here.
