Does my furling headsail have UV protection?

My roller furling headsail is made from oceanus sailcloth. I don't think it has a UV protection though. Am I right? This is my first furling headsail and I'm not sure what it should look like. I'm expecting a strip at the leech.

Usually the UV strip is only on one side of the sail. What's on the starboard side of your sail?

My guess is there isn't any UV strip because you'd see the stitching

Good question. I've not paid enough attention but I'll look at the starboard side. I don't think there is though.

I should be taking the sail down when I'm off the boat I guess. Luckily it's a small sail, but the bowsprit adds a little challenge.

If the sail itself doesn't have the sacrificial cover sewn onto it, you could always sew up a sleeve/tube to pull up over the sail when you are gone. Did the PO have one already?

If the sail isn't too big, it maybe as easy to take it off and stow below.

Sure doesn't look like it has a cover. If the sail is in good shape and you plan using if for a number of years, you can have a sailmaker sew a cover on.

I am 99% sure it does NOT. If there was a V cover, there would be a row of stitches parallel to the foot of the sail. Also there would be a row of stitches parallel to the leech- separate from the seam between the two panels of fabric.

We use sleeves for laminate sails on furlers, the ATN sleeves were the best of several used, usually talk to Etienne when calling.

Contender says Oceanus is a Polyester made to look like traditional canvas sailcloth, I'm unfamiliar with how sensitive it may be to UV.

Most people will have a strip of maybe blue UV sail cloth on the leech. If your sails dont have them you can have a sailmaker put one on. but if you have a lot of headsails it can be $$ so get a sock that can be hoisted up covering the furled sail. this way you can cover whatever sail you are using.

I recall asking my sailmaker about putting a UV strip on my used jib and she discouraged me from doing so, saying it wouldn 't function well on a used sail. You might consider an ATM sock, though this might be as time consuming as removing and reinstalling the jib.

It doesn't appear your sail has a UV Cover.

Here's a picture of my new jib with it's white UV Cover which you can easily see along the leech and foot of the sail.

My old jib had a beige UV Cover.

Do you know what she meant by this? That the uv protection wouldn't function,or that the sail wouldn't function as well?.

I'm about to add a UV strip to our old Yankee using sunbrella. I can see it adding weight and making the sail less effective in light air, but sure what other impacts it would have though.

It does not look like you have a sacrificial UV strip on the sail. I would have one sewn on if I were you, it should be cheap (less than 1k) You can diY, but you will need to be taking the initiative to purchase sunbrella and make space to sew it on, it’s lot hard but it is labor intensive.

I think she was referring to performance. Old and new material not compatible.

Re: Does my furling headsail have UV protection?

It’s hard to sew a UV strip onto a used sail that’s never had one - especially if they use the Tenara UV thread which has trouble in most sewing machines.

Check with more sailmakers and you’ll eventually find one.

The 2nd reason may be that the sail is already too UV damaged to be worth the money. See if you can break any of the stitching with you fingernail.
